Bigger Fish off Beds Yets? From: Dean (205.188.192.168), Massachusetts
Hey Larry,

Good for you about not giving up your "secret" bait. You give most of us more advice than we would could ever ask for, some things have to remain sacred.

Are most of the fish off the beds up there @ 43 or is it still worth a shot at fishing fairly shallow? I would assume it will be for quantity not quality. We'll be heading up Sunday, weather looks great. We will be in a rental this time with no electronics but I think I remember most of the humps and depths. I wasn't able to find any blade baits locally, I guess I'll have to mail order some. I hope that isn't the hot bait Sunday... because I won't have any!

Have a great time in Maine.

There will still be some smallmouths on beds and the area west of the pass were the water is colder is a better place to find them. I did not fish any beds yesterday in Graves Landing or anywhere but there were guys in there. I was searching for post spawn fish. Do not worry about the blade baits, try 5" grubs in minnow colors on 1/4 heads or hulagrubs on 3/8 or 1/2 heads to keep them crawling on the bottom. Try fishing areas near beds that have a drop to a shelf/ contour at 20 to 25'. I know it will not be easy to find without a depthfinder but by crawling a bait along the bottom you should be able to find some spots were the fish will be looking to feed on. Topwater baits should also start working in area 31 and east of the pass.

Have fun, Larry

P.S. do not tell anybody, but the largemouths will be starting thier spawn with the shallow waters staying in the mid 60's. ( I tried typing this in secret code for your eyes only. will have to see if it works )
