late spawning bass From: Jimmy Anderson (198.146.32.5), Alabama
I too have had this happen before. not all bass spawn at the same time. there are a lot of conditions that can affect it. it could be what people refer to as a late spawner or it could be several other things. What did you catch the fish on. if you caught it on a lizard or something moving very slow on the bottom, its probably a late spawner. if you caught it on something moving very fast it could be something else, such as simply an injured fish, a fish that has used its tale to find food (such as crayfish or worms), or it could have a disease. no telling. i have never caught a late spawning fish this late in the year, but i have caught them in july and early august. if the fish was in 8 ft of water, i doubt it was fanning a bed, especially on weiss, cause usually when they are on bed at weiss, they are in 2 or 3 ft of water because it is such a muddy lake. fish are crazy though, who knows. jim4596@aol.com
Weiss From: Biggun (67.35.55.222), Georgia
I agree with the other remark. It is probably a late spawner. Most people mistakenly think that all bass spawn at the same time; however, this is untrue. Some spawn very late even into July and August. If his tail was worn and y it was probably a late spawner. I'm not aware of anything else going on on Weiss. I was over there in July and caught some nice fat spots and largemouth. No sores on any of them.
late spawners From: tightlines (68.117.242.46), Alabama
it is very unlikely that the fish was a late spawner, when you see bass shallow, thus, on their bed in june, they are guarding fry, by this time, or even early july, bass are already pretty much on their own (juveniles that is), I've fished the coosa river for about 15 years now, and i've never seen a bass that even looked like it may be spawning by early june, some bass will have eggs that they did not lay, hence, they will reabsorb them, also, next years eggs will be showing up in the ovaries in early fall, if you cut the fish open this time of year, and see eggs, they are next years, also, don't think all bass move into deep water in the summer, caught two in the cove just above the floodgates going upriver in about two feet of water, one went 6.4, the other 5.9, bass are always shallow, getting them to bite is a differnet story
Double Spawn From: Jerry (192.31.106.35), Georgia
FYI, was told by a Dept of Natural Resourses biologist in south Georgia that some bass will spawn twice a year. I caught a bass in one of our Public Fishing Areas last September that was 291/2 inches long and weighed 8lbs 9 oz with a mouth you could have stuffed a large grapefruit into but sadly her belly shrunk in like she had finished the late March spawn. The fish looked like she could have topped the scales at better than 11 lbs so I took her to the biologist and he indeed indicated that she had just finished the spawn. I found that to be most interesting. With the climate increasing to the warm side it's possible that the second spawn could be occuring as far north as Weiss. Just a thought.
