fish Cochiti in spring near the bass spawn From: Thomas (205.188.208.105), New mexico
If you're going to fish that lake from the shore for bass you would probably do best in the late afternoon on the Tetilla Peak side in any of the coves.

For the best bass fishing, fish very near the spawn but you have to walk very carefully to keep from spooking the fish. Try 3/8oz white spinnerbaits with gold blades for coverage tactics and senkos or tubes for specific targets and sight fishing.

The largemouth seemed to spawn first last year. My buddy and I found them from the very back of the coves to about half way out. The smallmouth spawned immediately afterward and were around almost every shallow bush at the cove mouths and mainlake shorelines. Take it easy on the smallmouth because they will not tolerate anything near the beds and you could probably damage the population real quick.

Once the weeds come up, that lake makes a strong man cry. The largemouth seem to disappear except for a few occasional bites. Again, the late afternoon immediately before dark is best for topwater action. The smallmouth will hit along the riprap on topwater early morning and late afternoon, tubes the rest of the day with 1/8oz jigheads (anything heavier gets hung up too much). I've found the modified Pop-R best painted blue with narrow white belly.

Cochiti Lake From: Doogie (143.120.32.174), New mexico
Like yourself,I,ve often thought that they could use this lake as a bombing range, the way the fishing and water levels fluctuate, however the mistake that I think many people make is approaching this body of water as if it were a lake. It is more of a river system and if one is to consistently catch fish there, one has to fish it as such. That is,the fish in Cochiti relate more to the submerged river bends and contour than they do visible structure. They do occasionally relate to the trees and rock but more often than not, their movements are up and down in relative proximity to the river channel.

What can the shoreline angler do to meet with some success on this lake? Plan your trips accordingly. Beginning in mid spring, walk the shoreline and fish small, high percentage baits like a 1/4 oz Colorado Blade Spinnerbait. Choose your colors with respect to the water color. If the water is murky with very little visibility, fish a black spinnerbait with Copper colored blades. I,ve had success with this par-ticular color combination on many occasions. If the water is somewhat clear, consider using a bright Chartreuse or White Spinnerbait. Both the Largemouth,Smallmouth and even an occasional Spotted Bass will hit these. Hope this helps!

Cochiti Lake From: Bob (68.35.47.58), New mexico
Fished Cochiti Lake (Tetilla Peak side) in July 2005 (3 times) -- from shore. First 2 times -- met with little luck -- a few Crappie on Panther Martin spinners. Fished about 4 hrs. total. On 7/27/05 -- gave it a real try fished 8 hours (although got off to a late (11 am) start. Fishing picked up around 5 PM -- and caught a nice largemouth (approx. 3-4 pounds)on a nightcrawler. Spinners, plastic worms, recd. little interest. Even fished a grasshopper on a fly rod for a bit (practicing with a new rod) -- no interest.

I fished this lake a few times without much luck

I was there Aug 13th from first light till 1:00 and only one small smallie to show for it, I tossed jigs, crakbaits, spinnerbaits, and tubes and nothing...What is up with this lake it looks so awsome and has so much structure but with nothing on it, I spent the first 3 hours flippin brush in the 10 foot range and not even a bite, you find stuff like that in any other lake and you are bound to at least get a bite. We started at tetilla and ended at the dam, and caught the smallie right by the operations tower. If anyone would like to share some info I would love to hit the lake again with a little better knowledge, thanks and good luck
