new areas From: james (66.76.48.163), Texas
i fish the east side of the lake all the time.i just "found" running creek last week.it has good wood in it,lots of duck weed(i think that's what it's called) along the bank and some good grass coming up out a little deeper in it.i fished on the west side of the large point(still on the east side of the lake}last year and there is good grass all over the place over there.there are pads and reeds along the back of the major bay on that side.i caught some awsome fish there last spring/summer-3 5 pounders and an 8 were the largest.
Good stuff From: Tb (12.37.34.74), Texas
Obwan - I sure like your regular reports. They are not only informative but, entertaining as well. Keep them coming. I just moved here and am starting to build a house on the lake and look forward to being able to fish a lot more often.
why don't you From: never learn (129.9.163.234), Texas
ask your dad about it, if he's any kind of bass fisherman he can probably enlighten you. there are thousands of ways to catch bass that are funny till you try them. met some old men in south alabama one time and there were wearing out the big fish. i may have had 5 @ 7#, asked this one older gentlemen how in the world they were catchin these monsters, thats when he informed me of jigger-poling. you take a long limber rod, well over just about any tournament rules lenghts, tie a 50#+ piece of line to the end about 2 feet long tied to a zarra spook, then you take this rod and run the bait right in amongst the base of bushes and shake the piss out of it.. thought the old man was lying to me at first till i went and fished with him the next day, at first i laughed, i still thought the old fart was yanking a young punks chain, but when we started catchin 4 & 5 lbs fish i learned to love it.

anyway don't knock it till you try it, you may just learn something

Lol From: Kb (206.50.3.4), Texas
Obwan, I am not new to the Texas wind...but I am fairly new at fishing. Just started a few years ago so I always ask people to bear with me and my ignorance...but for the life of me I cant figure out the sight fisherman either!!!!

I fished Wednesday and fought the wind...did have some success but it cracked me up when I pulled into a little cove out of the wind...needless to say because we were out of the wind there were 4 other boats (all with the front of their boats crammed into a nest) flipping away. I pulled in, tied up to a tree in the middle, threw my trusty trick worm wacky style and caught 6 in a 1/2 hour....while the flippers were flippin I was catching and feeling pretty proud of myself!!!! I have to think these guys dont really know how to fish! (if you call that fishing)

Enjoy your reports too!

Good Luck

Wind Sock From: Bob (158.81.13.138), Texas
Obwan: I too like your reports...have you ever tried a drift sock or some call them sea anchors? It will slow down the movement of your boat in the wind and give you more time to present your baits. I use on Sam Rayburn when fishing main lake points when the wind start to blow. I have really noticed a difference in the amount of boat control I have and the added length of time I can present my baits on those all important main lake points. I use the Minn Kota model from Cabela's. For the money, $30.00, it is the best investment I have found.
never mind From: never learn (129.9.163.106), Texas
it seems like ya'll are doing fine with the techniques your usings so why add more confusion, if you fishing water shallow enough for pads your probably still fishin for bedded fish, you just don't know how
Beginers luck From: Kb (206.50.3.4), Texas
Never mind...very interesting thought. Your a deep thinker arent you! I guess none of the guys in the cove I was fishing in knew how either...and the fact that I am catching fish must just be beginners luck...and the band stand must be a much needed fishing feature that should be added to all boats when April hits to participate in your all knowing fishing methods!
humm kb From: m.t.hands (152.163.188.70), Alabama
i always read the fishing reports from texas, since i'm a former resident, i like the debates over fork being dead or not, but how much did the 6 fish you caught in an 1/2 hour weigh, the other boats that were sight fishing may have been fishing for the fish of a lifetime. i'm not a big sight fisherman, i have tried it, its not as easy as some people think, you just said you were catchin and they were not,its just not my style of fishing, i guess what i'm saying is i'm not a "sight-fishermen" i have never had a platform on my boat but i can see where it would help. it sounds like all you guys that are down on sight fishing feel non proficent in your angling abilities and feel like your missing out. and never mind i have heard of jigger polling but i don't think many do it anymore.

good fishin to all, keith

regardless of how you catch'em

should have known better From: obwan (205.188.209.71), Texas
oh well, I knew opening that can of worms would bring out some night crawlers, but you got to admit......if you were from another country and somebody showed you three or four guys standing on the front platform cruisng the shallows and pointing around it would seem pretty strange indeed.

I am sure there are a lot of fish caught this way and I am not saying that I am above trying it. I am also not above digging a hole in my back yard 3'x 3' and 2' deep and then stocking it with a couple of nice 7 lbers.

Heck, I could then build me a platform 10' x 10', call over some buddies and we could stand around pointing at the fish for hours on end. Who knows maybe after 7 or 8 hours of flipping at them we could learn how to "correctly" piss them off enough to make um bite........we could call it "practing" for the day we become expert sight fisherman.

.............if I do all that though, you just got to expect the people next door are going to have more fun laughing at us than we are sight fishing.

your right ob From: m.t.hands, Alabama
that would be funny, then the people next door would know for sure you'd lost it..

oh well, good fishin, keith

ps is fork dead? i just had to ask

It is pitiful! From: fish4bass (12.237.224.17), Texas
I saw a grown man at Fork a couple weeks ago with a eight foot aluminum step ladder screwed to the front deck of his boat. Made me want'a puke. I stopeed fishing the banks ten years ago when every fish I caught weighed around 1/2 pound and had six holes in it's face!
M.t From: Kb (4.63.75.5), Texas
Just so happens that 2 of the 6 were over 5 and the rest in the 2lb range m.t. ...I'll take that any day at Fork. By the way...the fish of a life time swims right under your boat every time you put it on Lake Fork
i feel the From: m.t.hands (152.163.188.70), Alabama
same way everytime i put in at guntersville....

good fishin, keith

Ladders? From: Disgusted (64.12.96.45), Texas
That is the most disgusting story I have heard.I know some people fish beds but my thought is that they only fish beds because they can only catch fish when they can see them. Im not going to fork ever again. All you "BED" fishermen can have it. As soon as you kill all of the spawning fish dont come to my lake to kill it too.
Too Funny, but seriously From: willieredneck (208.249.243.131), Texas
I would like to add that I think that Obwan has a valid point. To those "new" fishermen who have never sight-fished, it would seem odd to have everyone in the boat at the front of it, and maybe even funny. As in the report where the guy caught five fish in 1/2 hour while the "sight fishermen" were flipping away, it goes to show that there are plenty of fish in the lake to catch. No telling what size fish they were after or if they were simply trying to hone there skills. Besides, sight fishing is a skill that is valuable and effective in the right circumstances, just the same as tossing a spinnerbait/buzzbait and trying to coax a fish into striking that you cannot see.

I will admit that this was quite refreshing to read throughout this thread, as I am an avid Fork fisherman who can take the Heat, Wind, and pressure and still put fish in the boat. And I even "0" some days! The point is that everyone fishes their own way and as long as we enjoy what and how we are doing it, then what does it matter to anyone else. -Obwan, keep up the reports, as they keep us informed and entertained, and sometimes give us some valuable information on upcoming trips!!!

Just to keep the "Fork Dead" issue smoldering, I have a question: How can a lake be considered "dead" when there are still fish swimming in it? I mean, really, what is the deal with that? I have fished Fork when everyone said it was "dead" and caught plenty of fish (I know it is shocking to think someone can catch a fish on a 'Dead' lake.) Just my opinion and I welcome the criticism/comments.

right on redneck From: never learn (129.9.163.234), Texas
i think you said it better than anybody, there may be some dead days on fork, but fork is by no means "dead"...
Is Fork dead? From: kwicherbellyakin (67.202.101.89), Texas
Of course it is not dead.....there are still lots of fish in Fork. Problem is, Fork has been blown up so much by talk of monster bass, it is getting increasingly ridiculous. According to the Tx Fish and Wildlife Commission, 35 of the top 50 fish in Tx have been caught at Fork, but lets take a closer look at when it was likeliest to happen: Of the 35, twenty seven (77%) were caught from 1986 to 1992, and only 7 have been added since. I appears Fork has levelled off to the average of a bunch of good lakes in Tx. Is it time to stop the "monster bass" hype afforded Fork because it did so good during '86 to '92? Maybe it is time to hush for awhile and let the out-of-staters find a lake closer to them, instead of coming to Tx and catching our future lunkers, based on the hype that they are likely to catch a monster. If you want to catch a bunch of average fish, go to Fork on a good day, and take the normal luck of your life with you. Normally you will catch some average fish.....just like you will do on any other good lake in Tx. Better yet, pick you out a good lake in Tx, and fish it regularly, until you educate yourself to its uniqueness of character (like the guides do), and thereby increase your ability to boat more fish. That will be my method from now on, and I will do it on the nearest lake to me. I think my grandsons will appreciate old grampa for it.
