Castaic lagoon From: Doc of BH (64.162.178.176), California
Hey, Basser, Do you mind if ask what type of plastics you use on the darthead? Do you run with hooks exposed? Shake it off the botom? Swim it? I assume your in a boat, so finding the grass edge is a matter of electronics for you but I'm in a tube...any hints? Anything would be appreciated, Thanks and C&R
Dartheading From: 918 Basser (152.163.252.70), California
C&R, the answer to your question. I don't use my electronics much for locating the edge of the weedbeds as I do running along side of them with the boat. The lake I predominantly fish is very predictable of where the weeds are going to grow, so I usually know where that is and fish the same spots. I throw a 1/16 oz. darthead by Owner, although I think when I buy my next batch, I will see how 1/8 oz. will work. The 1/16 has a slow drop rate and I just want some variety to get to those fish I see on the finder. I typically throw parallel to the shoreline and fancast till I'm perpindicular and as I reel in, I constantly shake the rod tip while reeling. The last few times I've gone out though, I'll start with that retrieve, then when I'm about 20-30 feet from the boat I'll let the darthead pendulum toward the boat slowly. Many strikes are coming during this time but you have to be ready for them and set quick or you will lose the fish. The other retrieve is too shake the rod tip in the beginning then reel down to about 90 degrees then just raise the rod tip slowly. Once you find what retrieve they like, that's usually the ticket for the rest of the day. This is what works for me all year round. My main bait I use year round is a 4 1/2" flutter tail worm, Hologram Shad by Roboworm and on overcast days, Tequilla Sunrise in the same size, also flutter tail. I always fish this with the hook exposed. If you purchase dartheads buy quality ones, like Owner or Gamakatsu or you will lose a lot of fish. Feel free to E-mail me if you have any other questions or if I wasn't clear on anything.
castaic lagoon fishing From: mlee (64.12.96.45), California
hey bass i was wondering what kind of baits you recommend for fishing along the shore of the lagoon....im focusing on largemouths and smaller sunfishes.....and also where do you recommend fishing...are there any special spots that you tend to focus on more than any other?
answer for mlee From: 918Basser (172.175.239.70), California
mlee, the answer to your question is right now the bass are keying in on shad as well as the bass fry. My year round bait that gets me at least one or more fish everytime I go out is a 4 1/2" Roboworm in the Hologram Shad color. I rig this on a darthead and retrieve slow while shaking the bait. I use this on a 1/16 and 1/8 oz. darthead by Owner. The places I always have luck on the lagoon, are first the spillway, then all along the east side of the lake along the weedlines. If you stay near the weeds right now you can't go wrong. Whatever bait you retrieve do one of two things retrieve just above the weedlines or at the edge of them. If you're looking for panfish the spillway is definitely holding them right now along the west side of the white rocks. It's very weedy over there right now but there are a lot of quality fish there. I don't normally fish for panfish but I caught a bluegill on the above mentioned bait for the first time so they are very agressive right now as well. Redworms and meal worms will do the trick for them. Good luck!
Type of line From: basser guy (66.120.226.1), California
What type and pound test of line do you use???
Answer to basser man From: 918Basser (64.12.96.45), California
The primary test I have used with no problems is 6lb Stren in Clear/Blue Fluorescent. I've tried many different brands and this is what I use on my spinning reels. I don't do to much line watching while I darthead but there are occasions when I like to throw weightless worms and the fluorescent color of the line really helps. I have lost some big fish with this light line, but if you're going for many fish in the 2 to 6lb range versus the hawgs, you'll do fine with 6lb. The water on the lake is usually clear to green so any other colors I would go with would be clear and green. One last thing, if you start to catch many fish make sure you check your line after you release each fish to ensure it wasn't frayed by the teeth of the fish or any structure undewater, I learned that the hard way and retie often.
