upper lake From: basser man (66.120.226.1), Virginia
What kind of baits do you use on the upper lake???
Castaic From: Warren (66.159.200.5), California
Hey 918basser, are the shad still up? Heard that they went down but this warm weather should be driving them up?....Thanks Warren
Answer to questions From: 918Basser (172.139.40.4), California
Basser man, in answer to your question about what baits I'm using on the upper lake. I am exclusively using a 1/16oz darthead with a 4 1/2" Hologram Shad flutter tail worm by Roboworm. I have been using this for about 3 months straight because that is what has been producing for me. On both the upper and lower lake. The bait is just about the size of the shad the bass feed on and the tail action of the worm is very enticing for them. My first fish though yesterday was caught on a Wham Lil Fisheze. These are old plastics that are also about the same size as the shad with a flutter tail, with gold, black and silver flake. They don't make these anymore but I bought a few bags before they went out of business. I believe any shad size bait soft or hard in shad color will do the trick right now. But the grass and brush is where they are. If you choose any other colors to go with, I would at least use flutter tail worms or some other enticing action on the retrieve. I heard some guys were catching with some Senkos but I don't know what colors or sizes.

In answer to the second question for Warren, the shad are still down at about 10 feet according to my fishfinder and I saw some as deep as 25 feet. What I see at the surface all around the grass and brush though is the bass fry. Last week the fish being caught were within those fry but yesterday I didn't catch one within the fry but on adjacent brush or grass that was not holding the bass fry. The bass still have not been boiling which is another indication the shad are not at the surface. It's got to be coming soon so I'll be on the lookout. Get your nets ready.

hey 918 thanks for the report, just finished tuning up my outboard, 2 hour drive for me to get down there and I don't have a truck to tow so I have to find a friend everytime I go. The nets are sitting here waiting, did get some of the first shad that came up at casitas...i'll post a report as soon as I get up there. hit pyramid last week, I got skunked and had outboard problems, my buddy caught a 12lb striper early trolling the castaic hard bait.....Good luck, appreciate the tips...Warren

What county are you driving from I've got a nice running 2002 fish and ski and if your near by I can take you and the nets. I like week days if possible like a Friday, spend the weekends with the kids.

Castaic From: Warren (66.159.200.5), California
