smallies From: Doc of BH (67.118.93.5), California
Thanks for the excellent report! I used to fish the Housatonic River in Connecticut (where I'm from) for river smallies...everyone else went for trout..man I miss it! It's like nothing else. This is back in the early 80's, with stone age tools compared to what I use now. I'd love to pitch a 4'senko or Ika at those babies with my G.Loomis IMX 2 power rod. And the topwater bite! I'm in Beverly Hills, is the Santa Ynes River the one that is in Santa Barbara Wine country? It still has water year round?...I'm not asking for specifics unless you want to..but can you give me some general idea where this is...where to park? I'd really appreiciate it! You can post it here or to me at drfabulous77@aol.com Thanks.

hey pete, are you fishing at red-rock for the smallies and how big are these pools and how far is the last pool from the parking lot?
Santa Ynez River - Red Rock - Aug. 1, 2003 From: Leapin' Bass (209.179.236.208), California
It's the part of the Santa Ynez River between Gilbrater Reservoir and Lake Cachuma. Basically take Paradise Road all the way to the end - then start hiking.

It's a place where lots of people go to hang out, bar-b-que, party, etc. and most of the are complete pigs - leaving garbage all over the place, food containers, bottles, dirty diapers, etc. If you hike far enough up you start to get away from all that. You can also avoid it by going up early and leaving early - which works because that's when the bigger smallies are out cruising anyways.

The river doesn't always run but even in the worst drought conditions the pools were still there and so were the bass. It's running right now which is pretty good for August. We have found 8 distinct pools in the 4 miles from the end of Paradise Road to Gibrater Dam (not including the one under the dam that's illegal to fish). The 7th pool is by far my favorite. The 6th and 3rd are usually pretty good also.
