They will eat anything, the fish are starving and a little sluggish so use a slow presentation. Try a fluke, cast it into the boils and let it slowly sink while you watch the slack line, when it moves or tightens up set the hook....I went 3 times last month, it was wide open. Its gonna be a scorcher so bring water and ice. You can't buy anything at the lake. Also don't forget a clamp on trolling motor and battery......Good luck and post a report.....Warren
Trolling motor From: Brent Palmer (68.169.230.57), California
Warren,

Please help me out. I was under the understanding that the boats had 4 h.p. motors. What are they, row boats? How do I get a trolling motor without having to buy one for one day? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

Barrett From: Warren (66.159.200.94), California
Brent, the boats do come with a little outboard but there is a really bad weedline around the lake and when the wind picks up its hard to stay out of it without a trolling motor. We take a minnkota 50lb thrust that my buddy has. It actually broke on the last trip there at 10 A.M. so we just left. If you can borrow one from a buddy it will really help. Email me if you have more questions warrenus74@yahoo.com .....Warren
Barrett From: Doc of BH (64.162.178.163), California
There is a place in San Diego County called Sandy's Landing(I think) that rents trolling motors. I fish here tons, have for 6 years now. I own a motor, and use it, but I really recommend a good 15 lb fluke anchor (K-mart has one) with 50' rope. Total cost around 25 bucks and will make your day..it can really blow down there and the one they give you blows chunks. Like Warren said, work smaller plastics (nuthin' fancy...texas rig, medium -3/8- weight, almost any color-but you'll lose some to the rocks!!)slowly with occasional hops/jerks to get the reaction bite...but there's been a problem with forage, so I haven't done much in the way of hard baits or blades. Haven't even tried the last few times out. Anchor and work the baits with the wind to your back when you can for max feel..some of the pickups can be subtle. bring plenty of H2O!!

You'll catch fish on whatever you want to throw. Like the guys are saying, if its pure numbers you're looking for slow-fished plastics. Texas rigs, Drop-shot, Carolina rigs Reapers, Aaron's magic worms, Senkos.

BUT!!! If you're looking for that explosive top-water crash then throw Stick-baits or Pop-R's. If you want to get slammed on a spinnerbait, then throw the blades(CHARTRUSE/WHITE)

Try the chicharone(PIG-N-JIG)

Dude, its like being on the Nashville Network.

Word on the trolling motor, FIND ONE!!! It will make all the difference, just sneaking up on fish, not to mention if the winds start blowing, like the guys are saying it does blow down there, you can almost expect it by around 11:00 AM. Try running down to the dam if it gets really windy. The marina side of the dam is usually pretty calm.

TAKE LOTS OF WATER!!!

TAKE LOTS OF PLASTICS!!!!!

IF YOU'RE GOING TO BARRETT, THEN I TAKE IT YOU BASS-FISH. IF YOU'VE GOT THE TOUCH AND THE FEEL,DUDE, AND IF YOU MAKE IT AN ALL-DAY-THING LIKE WE DO(SUN-UP 'TILL SUNDOWN), THEN YOU'RE PROBABLY LOOKING AT +/- 100 FISH DAYS, NO B/S DUDE, JUST WORK IT AND FISH WITH CONFIDENCE

Paco,

Do a search on Yahoo for Barrett Lake and go to the San Diego/water/recreation page and it will give you the directions. Or go to the Turners Outdoorsman page to the fishing reports and it will give you the link as well.I live in Yorba Linda and it will be my first time as well. I cant wait. Post your report this weekend, I'd like to hear how you did.

Good Luck

Driving to Barrett From: Corn (4:20 basser) (209.179.50.172), California
Paco, from the O.C., take the 5 south( OR EVEN BETTER the 15 south ) (I DON'T KNOW WHAT CITY YOU'RE IN) To the 8 east Drive past the city of Alpine until you get to JAPATUL ROAD(I think thats how you spell it) make a right and drive south to mile marker #12 they're little green signs on the left side of the road that are counting down from the 8 FWY.

NOTE - Theres a fork in the road, a couple of miles down from the FWY. Stay to the left, its a pretty sharp left at 4:20 AM, so you'll know when you make the turn. The lane coming back from the lake has a STOP sign there, its only a one way stop. Watch for that whole left turn area, thats the only place I have trouble with. Its only a couple of miles from there. Look for mile marker #12 You'll see where people line up. Theres a white gate and you'll see the road down to the lake. The whole wagon train experience going down to the lake, and the buzz of everyone getting their gear ready at the docks is just so cool.

GOOD LUCK
