Swimbaits - fished deep From: Leapin' Bass (209.179.33.18), California
I've had quite a few friends fish the lake lately. Most have done poorly with a few small fish. But others have actually done very well. My cousin and a friend of his did extremely well with quite a few large fish (while everyone else was blanking). Basically the fish are deep and some are suspended. Shallow techniques are not working very well. Dropshotting is producing a few nice fish but swimbaits are what got my cousin his fish. I got a tip about 2 weeks before the opener from an outdoor writer who got a press trip on the lake. He told me that he was slamming the bass on a 5 inch Sea Wolf colored Big Hammer on a 3/4 oz. head. His technique reminded me a lot of how we fish calico bass on 40 - 60 ft. reefs out in the ocean. That is basically what my cousin did but he also used some 3 inch swimbaits in shad colors that got him some fish and a big carp that he thought was a toad smallmouth when it first came to color - needless to say he was pretty bummed it wasn't!
