  Subject: Highland Lake, Connecticut

Submitted by Jon Pski (ip 192.249.47.9)

Date Fished: 4/17/2004
Water Temperature: 51
Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

Started off at lake McDonough Saturday morning. Burr! Water temp was at 42 and only rose to 46 by noon. No smallies. One big perch and a decent pickeral. At noon thirty we packed up to get some lunch and head to Highland. Put on at about 2 pm and the fun really began with my son and I getting 15 bass. Mostly 13 to 14 inch but did get 5 over the 16" minimum. Every bass came on either a crankbait or a grub in less than 8 feet of water. Water temps were bumping 51 by the afternoon.

Sunday morning had us back to Highland with warm temps and sunny skies. Too bad the bass were not co-operating at all. There was a tourney there from NJ. I spoke to a few of the boats and they were not doing much at all. Unfortunatly, as the day progressed, we didn't do much either. At about 1 pm with the bass showing no signs of acivity we decided to do some crappie fishing. Pulled on to the weed flat south of Sucker Brook and I got a few perch, pickeral, and short largemouths on the Lunker City 2.5" Grub. My son finally tied one on with a 1/16 oz head and scored two crappie, one 10" and the other 14". The wind was kicking up then and it became dificult to work that light weight jig. Moved to the southeast shore and dragged a watermelon 5" Kalins around and stuck a very nice smallie. Would have gone well over three pounds if I had gotten it into the boat. The day continued to be slow until about 5:30 pm. We were then working the north end of the lake. Jonathan hit a nice 4.01 LMB on a crawdad Wiggle-O crankbait. Finally put a decent bass in the boat on Sunday. He soon snagged and snapped that bait in the rocks. He decided to tie on a chrome blue bait, same brand. Get over to the gatehouse and he smacks a little 14" smallie. Meantime, I'm throwing a crawdad Bomber and not getting a bite. We get over to the spillways and now the boy hooks up with a very nice largemouth on that chrome/blue crank. He's got to lip this one himself so grabs hold of an egg laden 5lb 10 oz largemouth. Very nice way to end the afternoon.

Over the weekend, I towed in three boats on Highland. Two on Saturday, and one today. The one today went out in a 10' jon boat and got grabbed up by the wind. Wind blowing hard from the south and this guy just had a single paddle. Watched him struggling against the wind awhile before going out and towing him in. Of course his buddies were on shore razzing him before we even untied his boat. On Saturday, I towed a guy in while his wife was on shore video taping the whole thing. As we got closer, she tells their young child to "Quick, go get mommy the camera". I kind of like towing people just to hear the comments.

Suprising how much the fishing changed from Saturday to Sunday. Saturday, you could do no wrong, Sunday, things pretty much stunk. Dang back door cold front! Got to blame it on something.
