Water Clarity: 2-3 feet Well, the weather has finally settled down some. The rain has finally come to a halt. The gates are closed here at the lake so now everything is set to go fishing. The fish are in their summer patterns. You can still catch some fish on top water early. The Grass is really in good shape and the fish are holding in and around it. Weightless baits like the Wave Tiki Stick, Lake fork Tackle Zigzag, and scum frogs can be fished over it and look out. The grass is getting deep enough the drop a jig thru the mat. You will need a heavy jig to get it down thru the grass. This can be very productive and exciting. Look for grass six to eight foot deep and go down the edge and drop a jig beside the stumps or into the openings. Remember the water is only six to eight foot deep and watch your line as there may be a strike on the fall or as you lift the bait off the bottom. I have seen times when your line would just swim away on the fall and you would keep peeling off line and all of a sudden it would hit you hey this water isn’t this deep. The Texas and Carolina rigs are another good bait around the edges of the grass, they are also good out on the humps and main lake points. Spinner baits are working around the grass. Three eights ounce willow leaf in white with a gold and silver blade is hare to beat.
The afternoon bite is primarily deep water. Big crank baits, Spinner baits, Storm wild eyes, and jigs fished out over the deep structure are productive. Use your electronics to find the humps and then look for the fish. Drop a marker and back off and throw to them. Remember don’t put your marker where the fish are throw it out away from them and use it to stay close. If you put the marker on the fish when you catch one you will usually tangle in it and move the marker. Now you will have to relocate the fish. The crappie are still running small but plentiful. Bridges and brush piles are the main spots.
