  Subject: Lake Lillinonah, Connecticut

Submitted by Jon Puhalski (ip 66.159.175.239)

Date Fished: 8/15/2004
Water Temperature: 77
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Did a club tournament at Lilly on Saturday night. 12 teams showed up. I pulled into the ramp and went into shock. They had dropped the water about 6 feet! And, it was still falling. Talked to the marine patrol and seems they were preparing for worst case with the storm coming.

The weed beds that we wanted to fish were now in pretty shallow water and we never did get a fish from the weeds. Back up was hitting all the small points and rock walls while they were pulling water and that did the trick for us. Suprisingly, many of our better fish came from pretty close to the bank. Grady and I threw and caught the majority of our fish on crankbaits. Grady was throwing a shad colored Lucky Craft while I was throwing an original Cordell Big O in bull bream color. His bait ran to about 12' while mine ran to about 6'.

The white perch were going nuts on those cranks but we managed to catch an occasional good bass on them as well so we stuck with them.We dropped about 4 or 5 keeper bass on the crankbaits but did manage to boat 7 good keepers, both Largemouth and Smallmouth. Got one Largemouth on a spinnerbait helicoptering the bait over a downed tree in about 17' of water and got a nice 3.36 smallmouth on a buzzbait at about 11:30 pm. When all was said and done, we weighed in 5 smallmouth and 3 largemouth (an 8 fish team limit)for a winning weight of 17.62 pounds. We had Grady's 3.64 smallie and mine 3.36 smallie. In addition we had a couple of three pound largemouth thrown in for good measure.

As mentioned, many of the fish were up pretty close to the bank which kind of goes against common thinking that when the water is dropping rapidly, the fish ought to pull off the bank. When we released all our bass alive, the bottom of the ramp area was covered with tons of crawfish moving around. Kind of makes sense then that the craws had to continue moving deeper as the water fell which left them vulnerable to the bass. Sure enough, in my two live wells, we had the big fish in one tank and the smaller ones in the other box. The livewell with the big fish was trashed with crawfish parts. Only goes to show that the only firm rule there is in fishing is that there are no rules.
