UPPER POTOMAC RIVER: The river is fishable again but just imagine how confused the inhabitants are. The yo-yo like levels all year cause so much movement. Water temperature in the low 60’s and the slight stain isn’t a negative. We catch smallmouth at Whites Ferry (above the ferry on the VA shore & MD side of Harrison Island) on black/blue Mizmo tubes and 1/16th ounce Luhr Jensen Speed Traps. At Lander, we do best above the launch (pool above the Sawbuck; pool below the Fence) with Mizmo tubes and Case Magic Sticks. We catch about 30 bass per outing, mostly small with an occasional 13-15 incher.

TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER: The upper river is still stained with temps in the mid-60’s. Clear skies, a few windy days and high barometer all week slowed our results but overall, we find improvement. In Mattawoman Creek (due to wind) we didn’t do so well, seven bass, all smallish, from outside creek bends within the “6-MPH” zone. Case Magic Sticks, our most productive lure. In the Woodrow Wilson Bridge area, we caught several quality bass on Luhr Jensen Brush Baby crankbaits (firetiger) from South Point, North Point, WW barges and Fox Ferry Point. Blue Plains habitat is improving where we took six bass on Case Magic Sticks. Paul Thiesburger caught a 26-inch walleye. The Washington Channel was stingy but there are a bunch of stripers along the Fort McNair dropoff. LOU guide Keith Barker is doing well in the Spoils cove in the afternoon. Broad Creek grass beds hold a few bass and Fort Washington Lighthouse, the flat on the south, is a good area to try a Sugar Shad crankbait.

SUSQUEHANNA RIVER, PA: LOU guide Charlie Shambaugh fished the Duncannon area this week with “good” results although the water was stained and falling quickly. Charlie uses Mizmo tubes, spinnerbaits and hair jigs. Best areas were the mouth of the Juniata (from mouth to concrete block building upstream), shoreline along River Front Campground, grass beds upriver and west side of Haldeman Island. The upcoming week should be perfect. Water level as of Friday (8th) was 5.6-feet and water temperature in the low 60’s.

DELAWARE & SCHUYLKILL RIVERS: LOU Associate guide Blaine Mengel (fishtheriver@enter.net) reports the Delaware level to be 6.2 feet (Belvidere) (down from 31-feet) and clearing. “It’s almost perfect now,” says Blaine, and “we are catching bass at a better rate than before the flood.” “We average 25-30 bass per trip with a bunch in the two-pound, plus size. Target shoreline cover, current breaks and eddies with spinnerbaits and Mizmo tubes. On the SCHUYLKILL, Blaine reports a level of 2.7-feet (Pottstown) and “clear” conditions. “We had a 35-fish day Thursday during a “Blue Bird,” high barometer day and half of them were 2-3 pounds. Current breaks caused by concrete or wood are the areas to target.

LAKE ANNA, VA: LOU Associate Guide Glenn Briggs (glenbriggs@aol.com) says that “bass fishing has picked up substantially. I’m using Carolina-rigged plastics in the back of feeder creeks around wood, rocks, boat docks and dropoffs.” Rockfish action is still good, or better, and Glenn recommends Rose Valley, Jetts Island and Contrary Creek. Cast topwater lures in the morning. When that action dies, toll crankbaits with a small bucktail on about two feet of leader (tie the line to the front treble hook). Glenn recommends 100 to 150 feet of line behind the boat.
