Date Fished: 12/4/2004
Water Temperature: 55
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

The Coppell Bass Club fished it's first Classic today, with good results. To qualify, you only had to fish in 4 tournaments during the 11 tournaments season. The top 6 automatically were entered, with their entry fee being paid by the club, everyone else had to pay the entry fee.

The winning team won handily with 2 kicker fish. Their 5 fish weight in excess of 23 lbs. A 7.53 and a 7.63 almost identical fish would anchor ANY 5 fish limit. Fish werre caught in several different manners, but Gary Gruber and Cory Harper caught all of their fish on shallow rubning crankbaits, including Rat-L-Trap style baits and shallow running floating crankbaits fished over the grass. They caught most of their fish, they claim, by throwing the bait on shore and then reeling it into the water and over the grass. We found 3 kinds of grass that were still green and growing. Milfoil, coontail and hydrilla. you found the green grass and you caught the fish. Gruber and harper claimed they caught over 50 fish today. 4 limits of keepers.

Others caught fish on similar patterns and some different ones. The predominant pattern besides the grass and shallow was covering water. Senkos, jigs, all kinds of soft plastics, spinnerbaits, basically the tackle box. Most of the fish were caught in less than 6 ft of water, even with the approaching winter weather. How long this pattern will last is anyone's guess. The 2nd place team had 12+, several limist were weighed in around 10 lbs, so no really good kicker fish, except the winning team. My partner (Joel Kinnard, last years Media Individual Bass Winner) only caught 10 fish, but we missed several GOOD fish. Joel set the hook on a fish we thought was about 3 lbs, but she was just swimming towards the boat. She got about 20 ft from the boat and cleared the water and she was in the same class of fish as the winners kickers. She was a little longer though. Unfortunately, that was the only time we saw her, as she spit the hook out. In the later afternoon, the fish were more active and hit the moving baits harder. When we first started, we felt like we were pulling through weeds and then the fish would just be there.

Hope this helps. E-mail me or post here if you have questions. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

The Coppell BASS Club is still accepting new members, so if you want to join a friendly fishing club in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, feel free to come to one of our meetings. We meet the 3rd Thursday of the month and fish following Saturday and sometimes Sunday, for our 2 day tournaments. Our website is www.coppellbassclub.com and gives you more information. We meet at the Spring Creek Barbeque off of I35 and Round Grove Road in Lewisville. It is located on the NW corner, right across the street from the Mall.
