  Subject: Lake Bacarrac, Mexico

Submitted by Andy W.

Date Fished: 3/10/2005
Water Temperature: 72
Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

Fishing could be summed up in two words - Very Tough - we averaged for our boat 25 fish a day and we were probably in the higher end on averages. But the fish caught were fat as pigs and fought harder than fish twice their weight here. Our 4-day average weight was somewhere between 2.5 & 3 lbs. per fish I would guess. Water was clear and appeared to be within 4 or so feet from the highest lake level by the water marks left on the brush. Water temperature varied from 69 in the morning the 76 in the evenings. Nothing huge was caught for us but did manage a nice 7.4 lb’er. Most productive bait was green pumpkin Zoom lizards (didn't seem to matter if 6" or 8") worked painfully slow. These same lizards with their tails dipped in red dye also produced a few fish. Our boat could only manage one topwater fish on buzzbait (the 7.4 lb’er) and one missed on Sammy. My partner caught 4 on spinnerbait – I never got a bump on one. Did find the next to last evening (wouldn't you know it) a pearl colored Zoom Super Fluke was productive worked slow in the cuts early in the morning, later in the day or whenever a passing cloud (few and far between) obscured the sun. Only excuse we could come with for the low catch numbers is that the fish were buried back into the thick brush and inaccessible - that's our story and we are sticking to it....lol... I guess we just hit the lake at a slow time for some reason. Rene and our guide, Mario (very good), did everything within their power to help us try and figure out what to do to turn on the fish. My experience should not discourage others from Bacarrac as the lake looks like a fish producing machine. It surely won’t hinder me from returning again.

All in all, it was a great trip with nice lodging, attentive staff, tasty food, hard working guides and plentiful ice cold beer and margarita's!!! The sights alone were well worth while. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I just was hoping for a little better catching – but that’s just part of fishing. We will get them next time.
