This report is for Saturday afternoon, April 16th. I had'nt planned on doing any fishing today. I had just finished my first midnight shift and could'nt sleep so I got up around 1:30 pm. My wife told me after I got up that two of the neighbor kids wanted to come over and have me take them down to the creek in front of my house. I'm not even sure that it has a name or not but it flows into thirteen mile creek. It has a few spotted bass in it but not in the area in front of my house, mostly creek chubs, and green sunfish. So we got in the truck and went and picked up Kris and Anna Baker, ages 6 & 4, along with their mom and came back to the house. After going inside to get the pliers, bait and camera, we hit the creek. I had them using Berkley Gulp yellow corn nuggets for bait and we shared Kris's rod. Since the creek is full of brush and trees, I did all the casting, as these two kids had never been fishing before, and would hand them the rod. He was getting bites but had trouble settin the hook, so I would set the hook and let them reel the fish in. I wanted them to be able to at least catch something on their first time out. So to make a long story short, Kris ended up catching a 5" creek chub, 2 small green sunfish, and a 5" minnow looking fish with big silvery scales, and Anna caught 2 small green sunfish. All fish were put back in the creek after I took their pictures with their fish. I hope to get the pictures back to them by the end of the week. But they had a blast and that's what's important. Sometimes I tend to get too wrapped up in my own professional bass fishing aspirations that I forget what's important as far as giving a little something back to the sport and passing it on. I bet I had as much fun as they did and all my rods were in the house in the rack. So when you get a chance, try to take a kid fishing. My kids had a ball yesterday and I got to take two 1st timers today. Does'nt get much better than that.
