Back in Feb.2005 I had a trip of a lifetime at El Salto with a buddy of mine and never dreamed it would happen again so soon. A couple of days ago I returned home from Baccarac Lake where I was taking a group of co workers and a customer from KB homes. We were there to fish for 3 days at Lake Baccarac Lodge. To say the fishing was fantastic would be an understatement it was beyond that. Never in my 25 years of fishing Mexico would I ever dream that a trip could be this good. Everyone in our group caught fish in the 8 to 10lb class. Most said it was the best bass fishing they have ever had. One of them said he also had on a fish that dwarfed the almost 10lb bass that he had already caught. He was very upset that he did not follow my instructions and put on 65lb braid on his reels. He had spooled on new 25lb big game that day and a fish so big broke him off diving down after he had brought it up to the edge of the boat. My trip was another story altogether, after getting all my guys set up with the guides and explaining what I thought the bite should be I took off with a co worker to figure out firsthand what was going on with the fishing. It was very cloudy and I loved that because the water was clear and I thought the fish would be easier to catch. I was right because I found a Rattle Trap bite that lasted 3 days. I was fishing a ¾ oz. Chrome black back Rattle Trap with Gamakatsu hooks. The big fish were holding just off shore on the islands around the main lake on the windy side of the islands. There were lots of submerged trees in that area and we fished the lures thru the tops of the trees that you could not see over about 15 ft of water. The numbers of fish caught by myself were not normal for everyone because they are not that experienced in fishing even though they would tell you that they had great fishing and caught lots of fish. I caught and released 24 bass over 8lbs weighed on my normark scale with one a 10.0lb. and a 10.2lb. and my largest a 12lb.11oz . I know some of you will say that isn’t possible but it happened. My guide Israel counted every fish caught by myself or whoever I had in the boat with me. My numbers were first day 41 fish second day 67 fish 3rd day 29 fish that’s a total of 137 fish for me. Those aren’t great numbers for Mexico standards but it shows how many big fish are in Baccarac Lake. We really enjoyed staying in Lake Baccarac Lodge and especially enjoyed our lunches and siestas taken every afternoon. One thing that is important is, if you are going to Baccarac Lake, the bite changed drastically when the sun came out as it normally does on a clear lake. Be prepared to start fishing 25ft. to 35ft deep on underwater islands reefs on the main lake. I found some big fish on the under water humps on the main lake. I fished a 4in and 5in. swim bait Storm big eye that weighs about one ounce. I fished this lure just like a jig and on the bottom. Color was not that important but I fished a whitish color. It is hard to fish this bite especially in the afternoon winds but if you are good at structure fishing and have a buoy on the spot you can catch some big bass.
