Fishing on Sam has been up and down the last week or so. We are coming off a big high pressure system that left some tough fishing earlier in the week. Fishing picked up the last half of the week, and we caught both big fish and good numbers. The fish are biting shallow and there are still some on the beds. But for the most part, the spawn is over and while fishing shallow, you will see lots of fry and small fish roaming around. This is the time of the year when a "baby bass" bait will work the best. Many fish will take advantage of all the new hatch, and with all the small bass swimming around the baby bass colors are a great choice.

Many of you will be preparing for the McDonald's Big Bass Splash this week, which starts on Rayburn this Friday. My best advice is to key on hydrilla beds in 4'-8' of water to increase your odds of catching the big ones. The shallow bite is a good choice under cloudy conditions, but if the sun is out, you'll want to focus on that hydrilla. Early in the morning, top water lures are producing well, especially Spooks, Chug Bugs, and Buzzbaits. Once the sun is up we've been doing the best on Senkos, Wacky Worms, and Crankbaits in 3'-6' of water. The best midday bite of the week came on Carolina Rigs, Brush Hogs, and Lizards along the outside grass. One of my clients caught his second 12 pounder of the season using my Insider's Map. Those of you who have one will want to key on areas 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, & 18. Those of you who don't can pick one up at Mattie's Place located in the Midlake area near the hwy 147 bridge. (936/897-3200). You can also have one delivered to you by calling (936) 637-2266.

We've had a last minute cancellation at our lodge, and now have a room for two available at a rate of $250 for the week. Give us a call at (936)637-2266 if we can reserve it for you.

With so many fishermen on the lake this week, remember to be courteous and cautious. Good luck to all of you!

God bless & good fishing,

JEFF BUCHANAN
