Hi fellow bassers, Finally had a half decent weekend to get in some fishing. Went to South Branch lake saturday with a fellow bassers from the great state of Alabama who had just moved to Maine. We went looking for some big pre-spawn smallies but as it turned out, all we caught was 5 smallies with the biggest being 3 pounds. Fished all the areas that SHOULD have held the big boys like 6-10 feet close to their spawning areas, rock piles and points with tubes, suspending jerkbaits, flukes and worms but only ended up getting one fish in each area. Found hugh schools of bait on the surface at the mouth of a big cove and we stayed on them for a long time and only got onr small fish. Well, we tried. We got the most bites from the hords of black flies around us that stayed with us ALL DAY. They had a great day. I went to the Penobscot river today in the pouring rain and had a very good day for the water being as high as it was. Caught 18 smallies with a lot of 2.8 to 3 pounders. All the fish were in the dead water behind a current break and in 3-6 feet of water. Tubes and flukes worked great and i did get one fish on a spinnerbait, that was how i found where they were hiding. Hope you all had a great week-end where ever you went fishing and caught lots of bass. Take care friends and i'll be talking to ya soon, DAVID
