Spent last Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a bunch of guys huntin' down some of those fat Lake Erie smallies. We had planned to go out of Dunkirk all three days but, the weather gods didn't treat us too well. Because of the wind direction and speed, we made the drive to Buffalo to put in on Thursday and Friday because it would have been much calmer up there, which it was. Saturday, we were able to put in at Dunkirk and fish some of the spots we found last year until the fog rolled in and we started to hear thunder in the distance. We had made the same trip last year and things were totally different. Last year, we didn't need long underwear or Cabela's Guide Wear. In fact, we fished in shorts and t-shirts at times. This year, I put my long underwear and Cabela's Guide Wear on before I got in the boat in the morning and never fealt a need to take it off during the day.

Now for the fishing report. On Thursday and Friday, I boated about 7 fish each day with the biggest going around 5. That doesn't sound bad most places but for Erie, I didn't think that was too good. Most of my fish came on a Right Bite tube in Watermelon/Purple Fleck. Some guys had better days than I and some had not boated a legal smallie. Most reported catching them on tubes with some catching fish on jiggin spoons. Last year, jerk baits worked pretty well. This year, I didn't hear much talk about jerk baits at all. The important thing was to get in the right depth (which seemed to be around 20-25 feet), throw out the drift sock and make sure your tube was contacting the bottom. Big fish for the weekend was a 6-7. What a pig!

I did a lot of experimenting with my new Spot Stalker heads. I caught several fish during the weekend on a 1/4 ounce Spot Stalker rigged with a Zoom Ultravibe Speed Craw. Since none of the guys had any of my Spot Stalkers yet, I handed some out and asked them to experiment with them during the weekend. After the weekend was over, I asked everyone if they had tried the Spot Stalkers. Several of the guys tried them and caught fish on them with tubes, finesse worms and Yamamoto Creatures rigged on them. Several also commented that after dragging a normal tube rig through the rocks and loosing tube after tube, they tied the Spot Stalker on, put a tube on it, and hardly lost any.

I'll be back next year. Sure hope the weather and wind gods are nicer to us!
