Subject: Lake Huites May 15-19, Mexico

Just returned from Lake Huites where we fishing from May 15-19 at Trophy Bass Lodge. We had a great time as usual, with wonderful accomadations, food and fishing. All boats averaged well over 100 fish a day, how many you caught depended on which pattern you wanted to fish. Myself and David Fields, President of Trophy Bass Lodge, where there to film a show for Bassin' Mexico to air beginning next January. We were concentrating on patterns in hopes of finding some schools of big fish. Others in the group stayed on the banks, enjoying to never ending action on lizards, spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Apparently you could fish a Texas rigged lizard on bluff walls and catch fish cast after cast all day long. That is one of the wonderful things about Huites, you can catch tremendous numbers, and have a great shot at that fish of a lifetime.

David and I concentrated on swimbaits and spinnerbaits in 10-30 feet of water on mainlake points and humps. It was really interesting how the big fish would disappear for periods of time, leaving us to catch smaller fish. Then all of a sudden, there they where! Apparently they were moving up from the deeper water to feed from approximately 2:00 to 5:00 pm in the afternoons. They were like clockwork. With the lake being almost full, we found some incredible spots where we could fish rocks and points that ran out into the lake and would fall off into 250 feet of water. David and I fished with Luis, our longtime guide and friend. On our last day of fishing we had three triples and several doubles on film, which should provide for a pretty interesting show. The camera man was running around the boat, trying to get out of the way of flying rods and fish. At one point David hooked a 5 pounder right at the boat, at which point he set the hook. The fish tail walked towards the boat, jumped out of the water only to land in the boat and in the camera man's camera case. Sorry Brock! We also caught several quality fish on lizards, Norman DD 22 crankbaits in shad pattern and on a watermelon Strikeworks jig. So, in summary, the pattern lots of smaller fish 1-4 pounds in the morning (with some exceptions), and then much better quality fish in the afternoon in the 3-8 pound range. The best Storm swimbaits where 4 and 5 inch pearl w/chartruese.

Congrats to Jim Moore of Bonham Texas for catching his best ever bass of 7 pounds. Jim was my guest, and had never fish soft plastics for bass! After a morning of instruction, he was in the groove and putting the hammer down! What a great place to learn how to fish a Texas rig, talk about getting plenty of bites to get it figured out. He had one afternoon where he caught a mess of fish between 4 and 7 pounds on points with the Texas rigged lizard. Greg Almond and Scott Bailey of Whitewright and Frisco Texas came home with big bruises on their stomachs from those huge hook sets. They said they caught em on every concievable pattern, with Scotts best pattern being a white Strikeking spinnerbait blood series with tandem gold willow blades in 1/2 oz. He would bring it through the brush on the bank, then kill it letting it sink deeper, and start it back. Shaun and Don Davis of FtWorth and Nocona Texas banged em up on Texas rigged lizards and crankbaits. Thanks guys for joining us on a great trip! I am headed back down next Sunday for another week of fishing and show filming, and now that I have the patterns worked out I am looking forward to a great trip. Our weather while we where there was really cool mornings, which is not typical of this time of year. We figured this was why the morning bite was not as good as the afternoons. Hopefully it will heat up down there this week like it is suppose to! If you have ever been interested in a bass fishing excursion to Mexico, now is the time! Lake Huites is having it's best year in three years, and the lodge closes June 15 so call me next week to squeeze in a trip before we close. Brett Graham Texmexadventures.com
