  Subject: Lake Champlain, New York

Submitted by CGToney (ip 24.105.170.254)

Date Fished: 5/7/2005
Water Temperature: 54
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Fished the Crown Point to Ticonderoga section of the lake. Water clarity varied depending on how much silt was being stirred up from the wind. Wind was not too bad (5-10 mph) in morning but got to 20-30 out of the north by the late afternoon. Fished from 7-5, a nice full day of fishing.

Water conditions were perfect for prespawn. Just as you read in the magazines. Fish were set up on wind blown points in prespawn stage on gravel or chunk rock shoals off the end of points in 6 to 8 feet of water. I believe fish were feeding on crayfish. Caught fish using crawfish colored wiggle wart and green pumpkin tube with a light weight. Key was casting into wind and fishing with current across the points. Caught mixed bag of LMB and SMB, 62 bass in total. also caught 20 perch. Largest LMB was 5-15, largest SMB was 4-12.

As the water got muddy from the wind, the fish would quit biting. Needed to keep finding points with the 2-3 ft clarity as day continued. When the wind got so bad around 4, while moving to another point. I took 2 waves over the bow and decided to fish protected waters which limited the points fished, but still managed to catch them on most every point. Some fish could be found within first 100 feet of bank next to the points but those were small males. Best fish were on the points. It was a day to remember.

Also fished half day on Sunday before heading home. Wind was blowing 20-30 again, I only fished 7-12 but still managed to catch 12 more LMB and SMB using the same techniques. I was limited in area to fish due to wind. Didn't feel like getting wet again so I stayed in protected area.
