Date Fished: 6/4/2005
Water Temperature: 69
Water Clarity: 1 foot

Went fishing with my friend this last Saturday on Avenue of the Saints lake, just off of Hwy 218 near the Shell Rock exit. The water was up about 8-12 inches from a downpour the night before. The water was a little muddy and temps were anywhere from 66-70 degrees. We wound up catching ten bass overall, with the biggest going 18 inches. Probably 7 of the ten bass were 16 inches or bigger, which is outstanding for this area. We also lost three fish, and two of those fish would have gone at least 16 inches. We caught a couple on Manns baby Minus 1 crankbaits, but the majority of the fish came from texas rigged baits. My friend had a black/blue flake tube on and I used a Zoom brush hog, junebug colored. I caught 7 of the ten fish, so evidently they were going after the brush hog a little more aggressively. The water was up just enough that the fish were up in about 6 inches to a foot of water, holding very tight to the shoreline weeds. We pitched right up into the weeds and that's when we caught most of the fish. Once it was away from shore, we usually didn't get a bite. I love fishing that way, pitching tight to cover. The only thing bad about the day was that the wind was blowing about 20-30 mph constantly, with gusts getting into the high 30's. It made it extremely difficult to maneuver the boat effectively. I think that if the wind would have been blowing about 5-10 mph we could have caught another ten or so good bass, because we would have been able to work the shoreline much more thoroughly.

If you're looking for a great place to fish and don't know where to try, come out to Avenue of the Saints lake. It's a small lake, but it's got some really nice sized bass in it.
