This report is for Saturday, June 11th. Fished the Mason County Family Resource Network Parent/Child Fishing Derby with my boys, Robbie & Matt. My wife came along too to cheer us on. The fishing started at 8:00 am and ran thru 12 noon. We started off kind of slow as we did'nt get there until 8:15 because I was at work on midnight shift and did'nt get home until 7:40 am. We fished the lower end of the lake down by the bathrooms and boat ramp. I had the boys fishing with Berkley Gulp brown earthworms and to my suprise they did'nt work very well. I got out two small Strike King Bitsy Pond minnow crankbaits, one chartreuse and white and the other blue and chartreuse. They were the only ones I had and would'nt you know that the chartreuse and white one was the only one that worked, as Robbie quickly caught 3 bluegill on it. They were his first fish he has ever caught on a crankbait and in a tournament situation. But the fish would only follow Matt's bait but not hit it. My wife even took the truck and ran over to Gallipolis Wal-mart to get another lure like Robbie's but they did'nt have any, so poor Matt ended up not catching anything despite my best efforts to help him. I even had them switch rods but that did'nt help either. All I caught was one 9" bass on a Spotsticker jighead with a Zoom finesse worm, watermelon with red flakes. We all had a good time, though but none of us won anything for our efforts, even with all the cheating going on. We saw several dad's catching fish and passing them off as if their kids caught them and this really upset my wife because we were playing by the rules and our kids got cheated because of it. I told some people who were running the event, during and after the event, including a conservation officer who was at the award presentation, but all he said was that he would talk to the guy in charge of the derby, and settle the issue next year. But I don't think we'll fish the derby next year. My boys are better fisherman than alot of adults I know and they don't need to win a $12 nascar zebco rod & reel to prove it.
