Last weekend I was blessed with an opportunity to travel North, from my home in the heart of Dixie all the way up to central Wisconsin to fish with some very special kids. When I arrived at the 1,200 acre cranberry farm where the United Special Sportsman’s Alliance is headquartered I was amazed at the stunning beauty of this remote Wisconsin get away. Rich in game and farm ponds, it looked like a perfect retreat for the many kids who come to enjoy the outdoors here every year. I couldn’t wait to go fishing.

I took my big ProCraft 210 on this trip, but had no trouble getting it on one of the ponds. I made a number of short fishing trips throughout the weekend, carrying different kids out to catch bass and bream. We had an absolute blast. The ponds have no public pressure, so the fish were plentiful and easy for the kids to catch. We were able to catch a lot of bass on top-water baits all day long, and a couple of the largemouth reached the 5 pound mark. That’s a big bass even where I’m from in Alabama. We threw a Spittin’ Image and a Pop-R for the bass all day long. The bream fishing was incredible, and they were big and healthy. Watching the kids fight those fish and seeing the smiles on their faces was priceless. In another pond, many of the kids caught catfish and even walleye from the bank. The boys from Procats, professional catfishing association were there to help many of the kids.

Some of the kids who didn’t fish just had fun water skiing, tubing, swimming and camping. There is a rifle range for shooting and many kids got a chance to shoot bows for the 1st time.

We all ate well, too. The food provided by the Pittsville Lions Club was great. A couple of smoked hogs will make my day anytime!

73 special kids and their families came to this years USSA summer event. These kids have either terminal or chronic illnesses. It’s not just the time we have to share with these kids that means so much, it’s the time we make to share with them that really counts. Fishing with these kids shows that hope knows no boundaries and knows no limitations. It’s a blessing for me to have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with some very special kids.

The potential to turn this working cranberry farm into a year around outdoor retreat for kids is astounding. It’s perfect for hunting, fishing, skiing, sledding, hiking, camping, swimming or any outdoor activities. I really enjoyed my visit and can’t wait to go again. Thanks to Pete and Brigid of the United Special Sportsman’s Alliance for their great hospitality, and to all the USSA people and volunteers for answering the special call to share time with these kids and to do God’s work.
