This report is for Saturday, July 16th. This morning, my wife and I had the pleasure of accompanying the children that are in the Leon Luckies 4-H cloverbuds club on a fishing outing and cookout at Krodel Park. I was recruited by the cloverbuds leader to help out with the fishing part of it because she knew I had the most fishing experience of all the parents who have kids in the cloverbuds. I'm just glad there were enough parents there to help out with the 12 kids out of a possible 15 who showed up, so I could work to keep their hooks baited, lines untangled, take fish off of hooks, and answer their fishing questions. The fishing started at 9:00 am, the hot dogs went on the grill at 11:00 and everything ended around 12:30. The fishing did'nt go nearly as well as I'd hoped, though. I had them using Berkley Gulp earthworms and yellow corn nuggets but none of the kids were able to catch anything. They had enough nibbles to keep their interest up, which is hard enough to do with a group of 4-8 year-olds. Just one little boy and his mom each caught a small bluegill on the meal worms they brought with them. While they were eating lunch though, I picked up a rod with a chartruese and white Strike King Bitsy Pond Minnow crankbait and started working it along the algae covered riprap shoreline. After covering about 50 yards of bank, I noticed some kind of fly hatch going on and cast the little crankbait into the middle of it and caught a 9" bass. What I was wanting to do was try to hook something for one of the kids to reel in but when I called out for one of them to take the rod, they were all to busy eating or running around so I had to hurry up and get it in before it got off. They were glad to see it though when I showed it to them and they all wanted to get back to fishing some more after I turned the little bass loose. I tried my best to help the kids catch something but the fish just would'nt cooperate. I then told the cloverbuds leader that if we tried another outing like this again, it would be better to do it at a cooler time of year when the water was cooler and the fish would cooperate. I just wish they coud've caught a few fish though, because for most of them this was probably the only time they would get to go fishing this year, where mine get to go almost every day. So try to take a child fishing with you whenever you get the chance. Tight lines ><(((">
