Submitted by Jon Pski (ip 192.249.47.11)

Date Fished: 8/4/2005
Water Temperature: 84
Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

Hit the water at about 5 pm on another sunny 95 degree day. All the milfoil is now gone from Highland due to the spraying. Headed off to Second bay along the ledges were I threw a DT 16 crankbait with no bites but, my son hooked up with two very quickly from about 12' or so on two different 6" worms rigged on a 3/16 oz weight. One of the two he got was over 16" which is the minimum length limit on Highland.

I wanted to look in deep water for fish so hit the drop off on either end of the mouth of Sucker Brook Cove in third bay with a black/blue jig & pig while Jon continued throwing the worm. A little bit of thin stringy grass at around 14 feet but no fish. Moved off to Bartons Point and started deep at around 24 feet. Took my jig off and traded to a black Brush Hog with a 3/4 oz weight. Though there is no grass now, I still wanted a very fast fall to try and trigger a reaction strike. On about the second cast into deep water my bait was very heavy and I hooked up with a nice 16+" smallmouth on the Brush Hog. Those creature baits seem to catch so many smallies that my jig fishing in mixed population lakes is just about done. We continued working up to the bank on Bartons Point with nothing else happening except a few bluegill bites on Jons 6" worm. Hit a few docks real quick with the worm and an alewife colored tube without a bite.

The sun was sinking low so off to 1'st Bay and Shore Drive. I tied on a 4' diving Excalibur crank bait in a shad color and worked 6 to 9 feet of water. Had a few yellow perch follow but no bass until I brought it ove some shallower rock. Right after the second pause, the rod just loaded up as a very nice bass engulfed that crankbait. Though we didn't weigh it, the fish was an easy 5 pounder. While the sun was setting in this area, I proceeded to get 2 more on the crank just random casting. One at almost 17" and the other at 15.5". All the bass hit the crank during the short pause I was giving the bait. Jon stayed with the worm and got nothing. We crossed over to the "Rock Garden" and slowly headed off towards the spillway. As twighlight was on it was time to pick up the War Eagle single bladed spinnerbait. As we got around the Jag dealer, the first night spinnerbait fish came on board, a nice fat 15 inch bass from a rock wall. Shortly after another 17.5" largemouth totally engulfed the spinnerbait. Earlier on, I had been helicoptering the bait but had switched up to a steady retrieve. They seemed to like that steady retrieve all right. I wanted to be off the water by 10 pm so we slid into the spillway area where I hooked up with another 3 spinnerbait bass all between 14 and 15 inches. Jon did not bring his spinnerbait rod so took to throwing my Exalibur crankbait with no success.

Very nice night out there once the sun went down. The boats went away and a nice breeze picked up keeping the bugs at bay. Total for the night was me 9 bass, Jon 2 bass. Out of the 11 we got 5 were in excess of the 16" minimum length.
