Hi fellow bassers, went to Wassookeag lake in Dexter on friday and went looking for some of the BIG smallies in the main lake and did I ever find some. The weather was mostly cloudy and just a breeze to make a ripple and making it perfect for topwater, and thats just what I started with, a spook jr. 5 or 6 cast into it, I didn't even see the hit but the next thing I know is a 3.8 pound smallie taking to the air at about 35 feet away, just about where I put my lure and my line went straight and the fight was on. I was in about 8-10 feet of very clear water but didn't see any of his buddies with him so I got him in and my search continued. I got into some nice cabbage that was growing in 6-10 feet and the wind started to die off and the sun started to shine more so I went to a worm and on my 3 cast into the cabbage, I was watching my line as it was dropping and I saw a slight twitch. I reeled down and set the hook and my 7' med. falcon rod doubled over and up came what I was to find out in a minute of so was a 4.4 pound smallie that didn't want to come in and play but I changed it's mind. At about that time, the wind came back up and I went with my spook again and right off a smallie hit at it three time before I hooked it and what a surprise I got when it jumped. It looked more like a small tuna then a smallmouth with the girth it had, it was all body and tail and after I stopped laughing enough to land it, it weighed 4.8 and what a beautiful smallie with the way the clear water makes their colors come out. The next big smallie came on worms and it was a fish I had driffed over earlier and watched where it had gone and made a long cast to the area and just as my worm sank about 2 feet, my line twitched and took off and I set the hook and this bad boy went 4.0 even. My smallest fish was 2.8 but I only managed to catch 6-7 fish in about 6 hours but when your catching 4+ pound smallies, thats ok with me. I did catch one on a spinnerbait about 3 pounds but that was just a fluke as that was the only one. My main two baits were the worm and spook jr. fished in 6-10 feet. I saw a nice 3.8 pounder in 3 feet of water but just couldn't get him to bite. He was busy eating up baitfish to small for anything I had. All and all it was a nice day on the lake until everyone started to get up and do the boat and jetski thing and being clear water it didn't take long for the smallies to leave to deeper water and I called it a day. Take care friends and I'll be talking to ya later, DAVID
