  Subject: Lake Champlain, New York

Submitted by Toney (ip 24.105.170.254)

Date Fished: 8/20/2005
Water Temperature: 77
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Fished Sat and Sun. Need to set the stage. Rained hard Fri nite and Sat nite. Cloudy most of Sat and early morning Sun. Wind blew Sat about 20 mph out of the south. Really stirred the water up. Sun no wind at all. Rain quit about 7 am but it stayed cloudy til 9 am when the sun started to peek out. after 10 it was broken clouds til 11:30.

Sat fishing was spotty with the wind blowing. Put in under the bridge in Vermont and fished the main lake for 2 hours. Managed to catch three 3 lbers SMB in the process. Moved to bridge and caught 2 small LMB. Moved farther south to near Putnams creek and fished some open points with spinnerbait and crankbaits and some plastics because the wind was blowing so hard. Caught 16 LMB chunking and winding the spinnerbait and crankbaits. biggest about 2-12. Ranged from 10 inches to 2-12. A good current was moving with the wind but it was to tough to set up and fish slowly. Fished with the wind after the trolling batteries began to die, then moved to calmer water.

Move to Ti out of wind along the large weed beds RichZ is so fond, and began flipping and fishing brush hogs. Caught 12 more doing that in about 4 to 6 feet of water, best one was 3-4. Weeds are funny this year. Slime weed ends around 4 feet in this area and water is cleaner. Out in lake water is dirty from all the wind.

Sun, stayed in til 7 after the rain and fished til 11:30. With the wind not a factor decided to try some new areas based on the patterns yesterday. Tried but only caught a few small ones on the open points. Water was moving from North to south after the wind stopped. I think this was repositioning the fish and all the changing weather is making the fish finicky. Fished some open points with plastics rotating between brush hogs and worms and other plastics like the sweet beaver. Fish had a preference for the brush hogs. Pitched and flipped my way south from Crown Point. Managing to catch 7 fish (best was 3-0) on my favorite weed bed in 1.5 hours, before starting to hop and skip weed beds toward Ti. The fish were on the weed beds but seemed inactive. Managed to fish a lot and catch 2 or 3 fish at each stop for a total of 13 fish, best one was 2-10 several in the 10 -12 inch catagory though. With two hours left decided to shoot down to RichZ favorite weeds and try my hand there again. Managed to catch another 6 LMB pitching before hitting a pocket and catching 3 in 3 casts that were 4-0 lbs each. Actually the last two were caught together. I had the 4 lber on and another was swimming along with it. So I grabbed another rod and dunked another hawg into the water and the 4 lber ate it. Now I have two 4 lbers on one in each hand. Tended to get excited at that point. I managed to swing both in both. One rod was armed with braid line 60 lb. Weighed all three all were 3-15,4-1,4-0. Now that was fun. Rain storm came and decided to call it quits after that and head home.

In summary, most fish were in the 4-6 feet zone in weeds. Champs weeds seem to not be extending into the 10-15 feet zone from Ti to the bridge. Weeds seem to stop at the 8-9 feet level. This seems to be affecting the fishing somewhat. I haven't checked below Ti too often. The wind and current has played a big role in positioning the fish each day. As the wind shifts or dies the fish reposition. Fish want the baits slow, unless the wind is blowing and then it seems they will chase about anything. Good luck.
