  Subject: Lake Huites, Mexico

On June 15th, Trophy Bass Lodge concluded it's 2004-2005 season. And what a tremendous season it was! The season opened up with excellent fishing. October still had the fish in somewhat of a summer pattern, and on an aggressive feed. In November the fish began to move shallow. Tremendous numbers of fish where caught throughout most of November and into December. Topwaters, spinnerbaits, flukes and crankbaits where the norm. With the fish on such a strong feeding pattern, moving baits where extremely effective. December brings cooling water temperatures, and with those cooling temps the fish make a strong move to shallow water. On Lake Huites, 1-10 feet is considered relatively shallow. The fish begin to scatter along the banks, setting up in a pre-spawn pattern. While numbers of fish tend to decrease during December, and into the spawn during January and February, the fish get heavy with eggs and average weights tend to increase. However, it was during this period that Lake Huites received the most rain it had ever experienced in it's short life. We were told it was the heaviest rain seen in the region in over 40 years. The typically clear waters became must less clear, and the lake rose some 100+ feet within weeks. Obviously this really scattered the fish and brought catch rates down. However, even during this unique period, patterns developed and we continued catching bass in the backs of coves that had fresh water. If you could find a waterfall, it was guaranteed to hold fish! While this situation presented challenging conditions for our guides, it's results all but guaranteed great fishing for this lake for many years to come. With the lake over 100% full for the first time in it's history, we had the best spawn yet. Fry could be seen everywhere! As the lake began to settle in February and March, the fish began setting back up on their typical patterns. The water cleared, and fishing returned to what we all expect from Lake Huites - tremendous numbers and some quality fish thrown in. As we moved into May, the lake remained full and was absolutely beautiful. Fishing along the banks, which now had lots of flooded vegetation and timber, was awesome. By May the fish had really settled in their summer patterns, and clients were catching them on just about anything they wanted.

It was during the last month of the season that some things really began to develop that caused incredible excitement. With the Trophy Team now settled in as new owners of Trophy Bass Lodge, we all went down the end of May to film our new promotional DVD, which is now available to anyone who wants a copy. Electronics have never been considered a standard feature at any lodge in Mexico. The Trophy Team, however, is made up of American fishermen and businessmen. We consider electronics to be an essential tool. We brought with us the best electronics available, and throughout the week of filming began to understand just how to utilize it effectively on this very different reservoir. On the last three days of filming, we developed a unique big fish pattern that we believe can be utilized to target those giants in the upcoming season. On Lake Huites, you can almost always catch fish and lots of them. However, you have to weed through lots of two and three pounders to get to the more quality fish. What we found, however, was a distinct pattern in which there was a group of fish holding on very specific points and humps in water 15-30 feet deep. With quality electronics, we could find them, target them, and most importantly catch them. And we where able to determine that these fish, all of which where quality fish 4-10 pounds, feed between 12:30 pm and 5 pm. While people where supposed to be back at the lodge, taking a respite from the heat, the big boys turned on. We where finally beginning to unravel the mystery of Lake Huites (now we know why it is called the "mystery lake!"). Once we found them, we whacked them. We believe that with quality electronics in every boat, and guides who understand how to use them, our clients can enjoy this same experience. This is our goal, and an ongoing project.

Once we could see them and follow them, we found that this large concentration of quality fish began their feed the very moment the afternoon winds started to blow. I was literally on a point, graphing these while most of the guys where back eating lunch. I felt the wind, and I literally watch them move off the bottom and turn on. They may have been having a second feed during the night, but this primary feed was during the day. I am sure of this as I stayed with several groups of fish from sunup to sundown for two days. The last two days we were there filming, we specifically targeted these fish. Our overall numbers went down, but almost every fish we caught was a much higher quality fish. Unfortunately, the clock ran out and we returned to the states with our new discovery. The next week, the lodge closed for the summer. For these reasons, we are incredibly excited about what lies ahead for us and this wonderful fishery. 30,000 acres of prime fishing water, and no one on it but us. The lake has no recreational boating or fishing of any kind, except the two lodges on the lake. We will open back up the first of October, and the lake will not have been fished for four months! Imagine Lake Fork all to yourself. And nobody having fished it for four months. Staggering.

We are accepting bookings for the coming fall, and the first few weeks are already filling up. Make sure you check out the Trophy Bass Lodge "Big Bass Challenge". Big bass of the month throughout the season will come back in May 2006 for a championship, free of charge! The event will be filmed by Fox Sports and Bassin' Mexico, which is our show on Dish Network. The winner will earn a free trip to the Amazon for trophy Peacock Bass, and that will be filmed too! So book your trip soon, and get in on action!
