Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Hi fellow bassers, fished two lakes this past week-end. First on saturday I went to Wassookeag Lake in Dexter. The wind was blowing just right and light rain made it perfect for throwing a spinnerbait. The lake has clear to very clear water and the smallies in the lake are starting to feed up as the schools of baitfish are showing up on top. I started out on a long point and within 5 minutes caught a nice 3.8 pounder that was close to the shore and not out on the deeper end of the point where I was first casting to. That made me change my thinking as to where to look as I continued fishing close to the shore. I finally made my way to one of my big fish areas and two loons were chasing baitfish and knew some smallies would be close and three cast later I hooked into a smallie on my spinnerbait that when it hit it was just one solid thump and no pull or tug and when I set the hook the mighty fish on the other end just came straight up and tailwalked in a 360 degree in front of the boat and I saw one of the biggest smallies that I seen in a long time. This fish after it came back to earth and went by the boat and under it without hesitation was at least 23 or 24 inches long. I wish I could tell you what it weighed but due to me using a spinnerbait that I had used during a tournament and it had been bent so many times before that I knew that with just one more burst of energy the big smallie was a free fish and so before I could even think of getting my net and the picture I was burning in my mind of that fish on top it happened, he made the one move that all I saw was the spinnerbait break in half and all I reeled in was the blades from where it was tied on and I watched as that beautiful smallie just swam back to where I had brought it up from. I wanted a smallie in the 5.8 to 6 pound range to mount or make a replica and this might have been the one to do it with, maybe next time. I ended the day with three fish under 3 pounds and two over three pounds so it was another great day on the water. Next I went to Sabasticook Lake in Newport on sunday and fish for both l/m and s/m and didn't do much on both. I caught two l/m in 3 feet of water chasing baitfish and both were about 2.8 pound. I caught several other fish but nothing of any size today but all in all the weather was perfect for just being out and enjoying it. The fishing will be picking up in the next couple of weeks with the onset of fall just around the corned this coming thursday and the big fish will start to show up in the river and lakes to the delight of us who are still going out and making memories. Take care friends and i'll be talking to ya soon, DAVID
