Water Clarity: 2-3 feet If you find yourself close to Bismarck, ND plan a day fishing on Lake Nelson. I recently visited family there and felt the need to chunk a lure. I did not bring any fishing gear so after a quick stop at the Walmart (bass fishermen beware, they don't carry much in the stores for bass fishing so bring your own) I was ready. Lake Nelson seems to be a clear to slightly stained lake and is a warm water discharge lake. I would guesstimate it to be approx. 350 acres and holds the current state record for Largemouth 8'7". Though my largest fish was only 2 and a quarter the numbers made for a great time. I had well over thirty bass on one day with most days going 20+. Couple that with the crappie; over thirty a day caught with a white roadrunner made for some really nice fishing. Watermelon seems to be a good color on the lake and I used it in Gulp minnows, grubs and worms. I also had one toothy critter about 3 1/2 (pike) and a carp around 7 on the roadrunner. So while the rest of the lakes might be freezing and ya find yourself in ND give it a try.
