Water Clarity: 2-3 feet Launched late this morning for the first time this year on Champlain. Put in at South Bay and was surprised to find good water color dispite the weekends rain. Champlain canal was muddy and by the time I took out it was finding it's way North. Cloudy skies, rain and little wind greeted me this first trip. My first stop yielded three little LMB on a lipless crank and spinnerbait. I did good on this spot last spring, but failed to find them this trip. I did however find them about 400yds away on a rocky bank. Using the lipless crank, numerous LMB nailed it for the next hour along a 30yd section of chunk rock. 3lb fish were common, but the smaller fish still just about ripped the rod from my hand. I could have put the boat on the trailer after fishing this spot and said the trip was worth it, but I went to another spot I was hoping the fish would be on. I think I got 7-8 fish on successive casts when I first pulled up to the spot. The Smallies were on the spot as well and I landed 5 of them, one pushing 4lbs. It was crazy with LMB from 6" to nearly 6lbs all hitting the lipless crank. The bigger fish hit best when I stopped the bait for a second. A tremendous first trip with over 40 bass landed.
