Water Clarity: 2-3 feet Hi fellow bassers, made my early spring trip to South Branch. This is the earliest I have ever fished this lake but due to the warm winter we had and the ice going out early, I went up to see what the big smallies were up to. The weather wasn't to bad, wind out of the wnw at 15-20 and the water was more stained then it normaly is which made it perfect to fish shallow at the north end of the lake. I fished just outside of the spawning flats throwing spinnerbaits up on top and bringing it over the edge. I was sitting in 8-10 feet and the smallies were in 4-6 feet moving back and forth over the flats. The water temps started at 49 at the ramp and I found 58 in one spot and it didn't even hold any fish, can't figure that one out yet. But I did manage to catch 6 smallies that went 3+ pounds on aveage and 1 dink that was up in 2 feet of water. Spawning flats, rock piles and beaches were the places to be at the north end, and if the wind ever dies down to a dull roar and you could fish the area slowly, it would produce more and bigger smallies as they are starting to move up think about that special time we all have been waiting for all winter.
