Hi fellow bassers, had a great day on the pond today. The wind is still blowing out of the North at 15-20 but at least it's warm. I started at the north end of the lake because it's out of the wind and also the smallies spawn in that area. I started with a suspending jerkbait in 5-8 feet but no takers. I switched to a fluke and still no takers, so I went with (ta-daaa) a spinnerbait and found one 2 pounder willing to hit. I figured if the smallies weren't bitting right now, I would try for largemouth. I switched to my flipp'n stick and jig and went to the flooded brush and right off got a small l/m. I kept flipp'n along the brush and noticed the water temp was at 56 anad I did see a couple of l/m coming out of the brush as I went by. They were way up in it and didn't want to come out and play. I went to a place where the wind was blowing up against an island and kept with my spinnerbait and a smallie about 2 pounds there. I went around the island fishing rocks and drop-offs and as I was bringing my spinnerbait back to the boat I noticed a big smallie right on the end of it about 12 feet from the boat so I stopped it and he nailed it and the fight was on. I got it in and it was a beautiful 3 pounder. The water temp was going up as the wind was pushing the warm top water up against the shore so I stayed with that pattern and moved to another small island and started to get several smallies in the 2-3 pound range. At this time I had 7 smallies and 1 l/m. I moved to another flooded brush area and this time decided to throw my spinnerbait in instead of a jig as the wind had been blowing into it. I started right off getting some decent l/m in the 3 pound range just sitting the spinnerbait right up next to the brush and letting it flutter down a couple of feet and slow rolling it back. Anywhere from the drop to the way back I would get a fish. Now it's at 7 l/m and 7 smallies. I went to one more area like this one and got a l/m. I went back to the area where the smallies were stacked up earlier and they must have moved on because no one was home and I decided to go home myself. The score, 8 l/m and 7 smallies, not bad for the end of April and the water temp in one cove was 61. Won't be long and the smallies will be spawning in there. I did look for any that might have started but didn't see any yet. Most of the smallies came in 3-5 feet around the rocky flats with big rocks on them and deep water near by and the l/m were in the deeper brush in 4-6 feet. Already I can't wait for my next days off and get to some more waters to fish. Take care friends and happy fish'n, DAVID
