Hi Bassers, met up with a fellow basser from the west coast today and hit the river. Christian and me figured with the high water the smallies would be tight to the banks but that was not the case today. The weather was perfect with light fog and clouds and not much of a wind for the first time this year. We fished tight to the flooded brush along the shore as the river had come up at least 8 to 10 feet and we didn't get anything. I started out with my spinnerbait and Christian started with a suspending jerkbait and we just couldn't get a hit so we moved up river to a bank thats protected from the current and we started again. Christian was the first to "hook up" with a nice smallie and I had changed to a mid depth crankbait as he had hooked the fish close to the boat away from shore in 8 feet of water. A short time later I caught a smallie the same way, close to the boat so we moved out from shore and fished where the boat was sitting and started to catch some fish. After catching 5 fish there, we moved to another protected bank and picked up a couple more avg. smallies and continued back down river where we fished around a couple of islands and did manage to catch 2 or 3 more. Up until now, all the smallies seemed to be scattered everywhere and not holding to the banks or islands. We went to a stream and fished up into it for about 1/2 a mile. Both of us went to spinnerbaits going in and we found several smallies up in this stream willing to play. The water temp was 56, not much warmer then the main river but we ened up getting about 8 smallies so it was worth the trip in. Christian had never caught a smallie on a spinnerbait until today and a 2 pounder was a very good way to start. After all, some of the smallies we caught were the size of the swimbaits he uses in Clear Lake or the Delta to catch the "hogs" we all look for. Christain is a very accomplished basser and knows how to catch bass ANYWHERE. The rain was starting to kick in and the wind with it so we ended the day with about 15-20 smallies. A slow day on the river compaired to what it normaly produces but it was great to meet a fellow basser from Calif. and to share some time on the water with him. Take care friends, DAVID
