Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

Hi fellow bassers, have I got a report for you. Get a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy..... I was invited down to the Sebago Lake area by 4 good friends from the great state of Conn. to fish for 3 day and what fishing it was. I was asked not to name any of the bodies of water we fished as I was a guest and I gave them my word I would not. This report is going to show you what you can do in terms of both numbers and size in this area. My friends Mike,Tom and Ray showed up on Tuesday afternoon and fished a half day and boated over 70 smallies between them as the spawn was in full swing. Mitch showed up that night and I showed up the next morning. We fished close to our camp and the fishing was good but as I was going to find out later in the week, not as good as then. We boated over 100 on the home pond with several in the 3 pound range and Mike and Mitch caught smallies that went 4-5 pounds. I had found some largemouths bedding and starting to bed in a big shallow cove and caught some that went 3 pounds by flipp'n senkos to them. We all got back to camp that evening and showered up, had supper and a few cold drink and told of all the great fish'n to be had on the ponds in the area. WED. MORNING... We got our game plan and set out at 9 am after a long relaxing nights sleep and started our fishing. Mike and I teamed up, Mitch and Ray fished together and Tom by himself. We had planned to fish a half day in one body of water and the other half somewhere else but WAIT!!! In 4 hours (by 1pm)and a nice calm and sunny day we had boated (the record for mike was at 115 smallies in one day, and me at 96, two in a boat) 77 smallies and both of us wanted to see if we could break our personal best for a day. At 3 pm and ready to try another pond, we ended up with, ready for this, 127 smallies and we weren't done for the day yet. Most of the smallies were on beds and some were post spawn as we saw several just cruising the shoreline but were willing to take a fluke jr. or senko. Ave. size was around 1.8 to 2 pounds and we caught several in the 2.8 and a few 3 pounders. We moved to another pond and picked up another 35 with several 2.8 and some 3's. Mike boated some big smallies that were 4 to 4.8 on tubes. We ended our day with over 160 smallies, this was just me and Mike and not counting the other guys. That was our personal best by far and it will set the bar high for next year. The total count was close to if not over 250 in this one body of water. We all made it back to camp and enjoyed a hot shower, cold drinks and telling our stories to each other and ending with a good supper, and with a full belly we made our plans for the next day. THURS. MORNING... The weather was starting to turn dark and gray with at this time a light breeze and LOTS of dark clouds. We started out to fish a small pond that we were told held big largemouths and by the time we got there it had started to rain. Three boats put in and we went our own way to see what this pond had to offer in ways of structure and bass. Me and Ray, Mitch and Mike and Tom by himself as he had to leave early to meet up with another group later in the day. Me, Ray and Tom started out in a cut that went in through some trees and was only 6 feet deep. Tom started out catching a nice l/m around 3 pounds and right after that, Ray boated a 3.14 l/m, a 2,14 and me with a 3.9 and Tom boated two more in the 2-3 pound range. It was a short area so we left and went our own ways and tried some different areas. We went to a big cove and tried some rocky areas for smallies and found the l/m on them. Nothing big around 2 pounds and went into a smaller, shallow cove and we caught some small l/m and a smallie. Mitch and Mike had found a nice rock pile and Mitch hooked and lost a l/m that was around 5 pounds. They stayed with it for awhile but never got it to hit again. We got back to the landing as Tom was taking out and we said out good-bys to our friend and he had said he got 7 smallies and 7 l/m all in the 1.8-3 pound range. We fished around the landing area waiting for Mike and Mitch and when they arrived we had caught about the same number of bass as they had, 10-12 with a few the same size as Rays. We got about 38-40 in 4 hours but all in all, a great pond later in the year as it holds big l/m's and great structure. We left and went back to finish out the day on our home pond. The weather had changed to better with less rain and wind and the clouds were clearing out with some sun breaking through. We got back to the pond and started to fish. Ray and I started out on a long, rocky point and Mike and Mitch started offshore on an island. We caught some decent smallies in the 2.8-3 pound range and they had caught both smallies and l/m with a l/m at 3 pounds. We moved to an island that had both shallow and deep water around it and started to fish. The sun at this time was out and the wind was slight so we could see what we were throwing at. The scene was like this.... It was mostly quite, just 4 guys out for a leisurely day fish UNTIL!!!! I made a long cast out to the side of a drop-off with my senko and waited for it to slowly sink. As I reeled up the slack and slowly lifted my rod to check on any weight, I felt a pressure on the end and SET IT HARD as it was at the end of my cast. What happened next was the line started to come up as I expected a nice smallie to explode into the air but NO, it wasn't a nice smallie at all, it was a HUGE LARGEMOUTH. I started to say to Ray to get the net but I didn't bring one so as this behemoth of a bass was jumping and diving and I was playing him on a spinning rod with 10 pound test, all I could do was play him out. And play him out I did, as I brought him along side the boat and he held his enormous mouth wide open for me to lip him and got him aboard. Ray put him on the scales and up to this point my biggest l/m to date was 6.38 and now that mark had fallen to a new mark of 6.10 pounds. This scale reads in pounds and ounces so it was 6 pounds 10 ounces just a little under 7. The guys that were fishing about 1/4 of a mile away heard me hopping it up and laughing and called me on my cell and said they are trying to fish and to keep it down LOL. Ray got some picture of the big bass and we let him go for another day. Ray and I ended the day with 46 bass and Mitch and Mike ended with about the same minus a 6.10 lol. We got back to camp and ended the day with a hot shower, great food and the beginning of new friendships as this was my last night at camp and I had to return home in the morning. As it turned out, I had guided Tom and his boy on a trip in MAINE two years ago on the St.Croix river, and I had met Ray on a trip to a sportsman show in Springfield Mass. this past march. The three days I fished with the guys was by far the best smallie fishing I have ever done. I have been friends with Mike(huskybass) for about a year now as we met on the B.F.H.P. by my reports. Mitch started and runs the CT FISHERMAN in Conn. and Ray custom builds rods for Mike and all have known each other for years. I am the lucky one who was invited by these great friends and awesome fishermen to spend some time with them and made to feel a part of this friendship. These three days will always be with me forever. I hope everyone had a great memorial day and I will be talk'n to ya later, DAVID
