Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

Hi fellow bassers, finally stopped raining enough to make it enjoyable to be on the water. Went to Wassookeag lake in Dexter and fished for the big smallies that live there and was not disappointed. Started off with a topwater over a big spawning flat to see if any of the big females were hungry but no takers. The water temp was 62-63 so i quickly changed tactics and went closer to shore and started in 10 feet of water to look for beds. The water in this lake is extremely clear so it doesn't take long to locate some big beds with some very big smallies on them. Tubes were the bait of choice and worked great as i caught and released 15 smallies for the day with the smallest of the bunch going 2.8 pounds. Most of them were in the 3-4 pound class with a couple pushing 5. When they get that big, i stop and think what a nice mount that would be but at the same time what a shame to kill a smallie that big and old. Unless hooked deep. i never keep anything because when the times right, I'll get a fiberglass mount done that will last forever and not have to take a big fish to do it. Another point to make is when you do go bed fishing, please ALWAYS crimp the barb of your hooks so it is easy to release your fish unharmed. Most of the fish i released went straight back to their nest. The hook just pops out, quick picture and back in the water in just a minute, another year class of smallies on the way. Well, i hope it stops raining where ever you are and you get in some great fishing. Take care friends, DAVID
