"Man...You Blew it!" is exactly what I heard after the snap of 4lb test and the 4th time a monster bronze back had leaped into the air then started the massive dive to 20 or so feet! What could I have done other than maybe stronger line. But of all the remarks. This hit home. I sat and sulked for about ten minutes! Yep. I lost it! The mother of all smouthmouth for me so far! Fished a mayfly hatch Sunday evening down river. Moved in and smacked down some flies with a pvc pipe and sat back and watched the bream begin to devour them. Had a few largemouth cruise in and gulp several from the surface when I spotted this fish almost on the rocks cruising back and forth under the tree. My buddy noticed the fish 10 seconds too late and I had made the first cast. Perfectly! The fly landed 4 feet in front of her and she had already sipped two off the surface with great delicacy then it happened I saw my fly simply dissappear. He screamed you got her! And I strip set the hook and the fight began. Now I have caught several big smallies on spinning rods and even a few pushing 6lbs on heavier fly rods but I suddenly realized I had the biggest smallie I have ever hooked on a 5wt fly rod with 4LB TEST! My guts were in a knot! After the first two jumps I thought I might just be able to land this fish. But with each head shake and power dive I knew that line wasn't going to hold. Sure enough on the last jump when she went head first in the water and took off deep the line snapped. "YOU BLEW IT" will echo forever in my ears! We managed 11 smallies, 2 largemouth, and tons of bream. But that fish will always haunt me. He said he thought she was easy 10lbs but I'm thinking maybe 8. Man what a fish!
