Subject: Lake Huites - Trophy Bass Lodge, Mexico

Date Fished: 6/16/2006

What began as our first season as owners of Trophy Bass Lodge, amid many questions and uncertainties, concluded this past week with the last group of the season. Fishing on Lake Huites ended the way it started last October, absolutely awesome! Those present with me for the finale included David Fields also of TBL, Mark Davis and Hank Nuemann of Shakespeare Fishing, and Jeff Simpson Senior Editor of In-Fisherman Magazine, Dale Loggins of Graham International in Paris, Texas and Joe Thigpin, Texas Automobile Dealers Association, Austin. All of these guys were really good sticks, and they put a real hurting on those mean Lake Huites Bass.

Upon our arrival, we found fish surprisingly still in transition to their summer haunts. This equated to bass on the banks, points, humps and everywhere else we looked from 8 to 35 feet deep. While there were plenty of fish caught less than 8 feet deep the deeper water seemed to hold the better quality bass. Primary baits included swimbaits, crankbaits, Texas rigged plastics, and spinnerbaits. The first morning out, Joe Thigpin and I pulled up to a large flat on the end of a major main lake point just as the sun was rising over the beautiful Sierra Madre Mountains. When my first cast with a swimbait resulted in a solid 5 pounder, I knew it was going to be awesome. Over the next half hour, Joe and I caught around twenty-five bass, with seven over 5 pounds and one pushing 8 pounds, included a double with five pounders.

Mark Davis, fishing with Jeff, headed down towards the dam on the second morning. Mark said there were many times when they would catch a big bass, a school of big fish were right behind trying to take the bait away. In one instance, Mark had a 6 pounder on the back hook, and had a 9 pound 13 oz. bass take the bait away! Now that’s a pretty good exchange! He also said he had another double where the fish on the back of the crankbait straightened out the treble hooks. That morning they had nine or ten fish between five and ten pounds by 9:30 am. In three and a half days of fishing, Mark, Rob and Jeff had the 9 pounder, four over 8 pounds, seven over 7 pounds, and estimated around 45 between five and seven pounds. Their fish count per day was relatively low, in the 50 fish per day per man range. However, when you target these bigger fish you’re not going to catch allot of the smaller ones, especially this time of year.

The last afternoon, Dale Loggins and I made a long run up the river, past the canyons. We were fishing a small island that had a point that tapered off to around 35 feet before it fell off into the river. The previous afternoon I had fished the same point with David Fields, and we caught a five, two 6’s, and a 7 pounder off it. I did not know it at the time, but that same morning another client, fishing with the guide we had the previous day, caught an 8 pounder off this point. That afternoon, Dale and I hooked 4 fish between 6 and 8 pounds off the same place, again! I was fishing braid, and the big fish ripped two guides off my rod, which then immediately exploded. I still managed to get enough hook in him to put him in the boat. These Mexico bass seem to be so much more powerful than our bass at home for some reason. Once we finished fishing it the way we had been, we did something different. We backed off and fished it on out with Texas rigs, and there was an entirely different group of fish down around 25 to 30 feet deep. We caught another 30 fish over the next hour off the end of that point up to four pounds. It was absolutely stacked!

The stories could go on and on. Fishing with this group of guys was a blast! But then, when your catching 75 to 100 fish a day with 5 to 10 over five pounds, who wouldn’t enjoy it?

All of us here at Trophy Bass Lodge would like to thank all of you who fished with us over the past season. The fishing was well beyond our expectations for this young lake, and we are tremendously excited about next year’s prospects. Lake Huites is “back” and as healthy as ever! We would also like to thank our sponsors, whose support is critical to our continued operations. Pflueger-Shakespeare Fishing, All Star Rods, Great Fish Reproductions, Minn Kota, Lowrance, and Strikeworks Tackle, just to name a few. If you would like to get in on the great fishing next season, look us up at www.texmexadventures.com or www.trophybasslodge.com . See ya next season! Brett Graham Trophy Team Trophy Bass Lodge
