  Subject: Tidal Potomac River, Maryland

Submitted by Reel Bass Adventures

Date Fished: 6/23/2006
Water Temperature: 81
Water Clarity: 1 foot

Bass have been feeding aggressively all week, with Rico poppers boating large numbers of bass both on cloudy days or mornings/evenings, especially while fishing banks where shade is present. Once the sun shines on the water, we have changed tactics, opting for 4" Wackos in green pumpkin/gold flake, pumpkin/green flake, or june bug. Berkley Pulse Worms have also produced well, but because the lure has been recently removed from Berkley's line of soft plastics, we have been purchasing them in bulk from Wacky Worm. Small crankbaits worked on creek ledges during low tide phases have caught both numbers of bass and some large fish as well. A Norman's Crappie Crankbait in perch color produced well all through the week, catching large numbers of bass, white and yellow perch, a snakehead, and several channel catfish. RBA Guide Bob Troup and Dr. Jack Rosenblatt each caught a northern snakehead in Pomonkey Creek this past week, with both fish measuring 18 inches. Maryland DNR biologists plan to conduct a shock survey of the creek in the upcoming week in an attempt to guage just how many of these invasive fish are in the area. Expect fishing to suffer for a couple of days in the area after the shock survey is completed. Bass are being caught both in main river grassbeds as well as inside of many of the tidal creeks, where we have been concentrating our efforts on banks with grass and at least 6 feet of water. The same patterns have remained consistent throughout the week.
