A few Alabama friends and I decided to head North for the weekend and fish the 3rd annual Childswish.com event in central Wisconsin. The event is held each year for kids with serious illnesses, chronic illness and/or life-threatening illnesses. We were blessed with over 100 kids at this years event. With the kids, including family members there were over 300 people on grounds to enjoy many activities such as fishing, shooting, archery, horseback riding, boating, camping, etc. The list goes on. There were kids and families from many different parts of the country.

The best part was no doubt the fishing, where small groups of kids could catch 100+ bass a day and as many bream, perch and catfish as they could handle. It was absolutely awesome to watch as these kids hooked and landed countless bass from 1 to 5 pounds. Many kids were introduced to fishing and to fishing with artificial lures for the 1st time in their lives. The smiles on their faces say it all. As always the event left us all with unforgettable memories and eternal inspiration.

Wisconsin is 1000+ miles one way from here. But for myself and for special Alabama anglers Yancy and Simon who fish tournaments on the FLW trail, every smile made the 1000 mile trip just 1000 reasons to go up there.

This special Childswish.com event provides an atmosphere where ages, illnesses and disabilities don’t matter. The laughter from the “pull” at the other end of the line covers up the countless scars from surgeries and long hospital stays. It’s never a question of “having time” to share hope with such special kids, it’s making the time that makes the difference. As do many others, I feel blessed to be entrusted with the opportunity to spend some time with such special folks, and I remain thankful to God for every moment that I get to enjoy fishing the way it was meant to be.

If you want to be involved with a group that truly supports hunting and fishing for kids, volunteer or support the United Special Sportsmen’s Alliance at childswish.com

God bless and good fishing.
