Date Fished: 8/8/2006 Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater Varner has been good early for largemouths on offshore grassbeds but better later in the day on schooling hybrids and largemouths. The good crankbait bite that was happening in the middle of the day from a couple weeks ago has dissapeared with more of the deeper fish suspending around bait in open water. The key to catching fish for me has been slowing down with soft plastics in areas that have nice green grass. Most of these spots are way offshore and on outside edges of weedlines and there are not that many of them. The good news is that if you can find some of this grass it is bunching up the fish and bait so if you can catch one there are usually more there. Later in the day I have done better fishing for hybrids with some largemouths mixed in which have been pretty active schooling on top all day and are a bunch of fun to catch when the largemouth fishing slows down. In the photo is Kevin who drove up from Valdosta, GA to learn to fish offshore structure. We caught five fish with a four and a six pounder all caught from offshore grassbeds.
