Chased SMB from August 8-11. Launched each day out of Sampson. Launched about 7pm on Tuesday under sunny skies and a north wind. Had a couple of fish on while the sun was still up but never landed one till the sun went down. Caught three SMB, two that were over 3lbs, throwing a double willow spinner-bait. Wednesday morning brought a stiff southern wind, turning a normal 10 minute run into a 35 minute wet bumpy ride. The spinner-bait drew the most srikes from the smallies who seemed to bite better as the sun started to hit the water. For some reason I've always had better luck here keeping the boat over the weed-line and casting out to deeper water. I just let the wind blow me north as I worked the edge of the weeds. The action was steady with several fish over 3lbs including one that went 3.7lbs. When the sun got brighter I pulled a few fish out of the weeds with a soft-twitch bait. I fished till shortly after ten catching 16 fish that including a couple of little LMB. I launched again shortly after 6pm, but again did not connect with a fish till the sun went down. The wind laid down so I ran a short ways north of the ramp. First fish took a topwater-plug with the others hitting a spinner-bait. Ended with four fish all between 2.75-3.25lbs. Thursday brought even stronger southern winds making for another rough ride south. Once again the spinner-bait brought more strikes especially as the sun broke out. Action was steady through out the morning. I didn't get but two or three over 2.75lbs but the numbers were good as over 30 fish made it to the boat before 10am. I even picked up a few fish on a drop-shot. Several of the bass I got were green fish up to 14". The afternoon brought the chance of thunder storms and a northern wind so didn't launch. Friday morning greeted me with a lighter northern breeze making for a quick run south to the area that had produced so well the mornings before. Once again the fish bit better once the sun broke over the trees. First two fish took a topwater-plug with the spinner-bait accounting for the rest. I ended my trip at 9am as I had to take camp down, so I kind of rushed my fishing. Ended up with 13 fish with the last fish of the trip being a 3+lb SMB. Love to catch those SMB on spinner-baits and was glad to find them more than willing to chase them down. I'm a little concerned abouth the sores I noticed on 60-70% of the SMB. Something is up with them though they still fought and seemed strong otherwise. I hope it was not VHSV as I understand SMB are one of the species that can be affected by the virus. Still I can't wait to get back!
