Hi fellow bassers, made it over to the pond this past friday and introduced a fellow basser to it. Me and Derek arrived to a very calm, bright and sunny pond and the thoughts of spinner baits on the wind blown shores quickly left my mind as i looked at Derek and said this is going to be a tough day compared to my last two trips that netted me over 70 fish because of the weather. Well, we know the weather has a way of throwing things off but onward. We launched the Javelin and looked around the pond to see if anything was going on and noticed a lot of bait fish with fish busting on them so we both started with top water. After awhile and neither of us getting any hits, we switched to senko's in some deep cabbage and still no takers. Oh, we are playing the game of $1.00 for the first fish, $1.00 for the biggest and $1.00 for the most today. Well the first fish was many, many cast later on a senko in about 8 feet of water around some rocks and cabbage by me. That started what was going to be a war of wars. Derek was determined not to be taken by bass1 even though he knew it was my home water and the odds we're against him. After that 2 pound smallie was brought in we fished around the areas for awhile and never got another bite so we moved up the pond to the island and started again. Shortly into the slow drift along it, a nice breeze started to blow out of the WNW right across the flat and everyone who has ever read my postings know where this story is heading, "SPINNERBAIT TIME." I asked Derek if he used spinner baits and he said he does but didn't have enough confidence in them and hasn't caught much on them. I told him that he was going to see what a spinner bait can do when the conditions are right. With in the next few cast, bass1 was on the board with a nice l/m about 2.8 pounds. Derek was still going with top water and senko's. A few more cast and a few more bass later, Derek decided to switch to a spinner bait. I explained to him the cast and retrieve of the bait and why it works so good at this time. He hooked up almost immediately with a nice smallie and the "friendly" competition was well on it's way. About this time we heard someone yelling and waving their arms and saw a houseboat that had been fishing drifting into the shore, so we went over and found out they had motor troubles and we towed them back to their camp. We started where we dropped them off and bass1 strikes again on a spinner bait. Now at this point if I'm right, the score is Derek 1, Bass1 6. Derek has been fishing bass for about 5 years now and is quick at learning new tech. The weather being from bright and sunny to heavy cloud cover and windy was really playing a big part because when the cloud cover was on, so were the fish and as soon as the sun came back out, the fishing died. So we kept switching back and forth from spinner baits to jigs to senko's trying to keep up with the patterns we found. After going down the shore a ways, we moved back to the island and Derek connected with a very nice smallie on a jig in 8 feet of water going close to 3 pounds. The fish when we caught them were far and few between but when one of us got one on, it was usually between 1.8, 3 pounds. Now, the wind was blowing at a good clip and has been for about 2 hours so we moved to a flat and both went to our spinner baits. The score around this time was Derek 2, bass1 8. On the flat we both connected with some smallies and the score was moving up. It was getting late so we decided to move back up to a flat and work down towards the boat launch. The score, Derek 4, bass1 10. I was keeping my 6 fish advantage over the "rookie" until.... We were moving down the shore, the wind was blowing, the smallies and a few l/m had moved onto the flat to feed and suddenly Derek was on fire with his spinner bait, the bait i showed him how to fish, the bait he had no confident in, he caught bass after bass and the score was climbing up under his column. Derek 5,6,7,8,9, bass1 11. Derik was putting fish in the boat on a steady course to win the event. Moving along the shore by the landing, Derek connects with yet another two more l/m's tying the score at 11 each. What a comeback from 6 fish down to tying it up within 50 yards from calling it quits but wait..... bass1 not to be upset on my home water started to pick apart the water around the boat slips by the landing and the rocks on the flat around the swimming area and WHAM, a 14 inch smallie nailed my spinner bait and Derek also got a hit but missed it and as the final gun goes off ending the 4 quarter,Derik 11 and bass1 12. For someone who has only been bassn for a short time, Derik was not only a good basser but also a great sport and he is someone i would fish with anytime. He told me at the landing that he is going to stock up on spinner baits for our next outing. Seems like Derek has a new confident bait. Well bassers, hope you all have a safe and happy labor day and i'll be writing soon, DAVID
