Hi bassers, fished a river tournament yesterday on the beautiful Penobscot River. We started the day with about a dozen boats and the weather was slightly foggy blocking the sun and a slight breeze out of the south. We ended up drawing 8th but was still able to get to our "honey hole" where visions of 2.8 to 4 pounders were caught there two years ago still played fresh in our minds, BUT..... We arrived at our place and started fishing and right off i got a hit and set the hook, a dink. Next bite, a dink, then another and another then we caught a couple that went 2.7, 2.3 and 2.5 and then back to dink, dink, dink. NOW, the last time we fished this area all the smallies were of quality size with NO DINKS around at all so we kept up fishing around the area to see where all the big smallies were and couldn't find anything over 3 pounds, a 2.13 was it. We left the area and went further up river to fish over some grassbeds with a spinner bait that always pays off, until today. We couldn't even draw a strike in three spots so we went back to where we started and fished tubes and jigs. We started with senko's. We thought fishing deeper would let our baits go straight to bottom and bigger fish with out any dinks getting to the bait, WRONG. We caught just as many dinks as we did before. Time was running out and we called it a day and headed back to weigh-in. After all was said and done we took 5th over all with 11.78 for 5 fish. Friends of me and my partner Larry took 1st with 15.09 and lunker with just under 4 pounds so the big smallies were still in the river but far and few between. A couple of smallies around 3.8 were also weighed but not alot, that showed the weather had the bigger fish shut down but all in all a great day fishing as we caught around 40 smallies but lots and lots of dinks. Next week my buddy from Texas will be staying with me and we'll be fishing hard. Stay tuned friends and have a great week, DAVID
