Hi fellow bassers, been a while since i last posted but the fall fishing in MAINE has been up and down this year due to the weather getting cold early. And when i say early, i mean about late Aug. to early Sept. it started to get frosty on a few mornings. Most of my trips have produced 15-20 bass each time except my next to last one on Big Indian where i only got 4 l/m and nothing big but still a nice day on the lake. This past week from Thurs. to yesterday (Sunday) a good friend of mine, Mike from Conn. came up to do some late fall fishing with me and yet again the weather had us at it's mercy. THURSDAY.... We hit South Branch lake to get some big smallies and the wind was blowing NW at 25-30 mph. Water temp was 46 and went to 50 later in the day but the big smallies were nowhere to be found. We threw sus. jerk baits, spinner baits, crank baits, rattletraps, senkos and flukes. Mike ended up getting 2 smallies on the fluke behind an island in 6-8 feet of water close to some rocks with grass around them and i got my one and only smallie from there on a crank bait that went 3.3 pounds and was the biggest of the day. Bright day with wind had everything locked down. Mike did catch one on a spinner bait right next to an island with deep water close by but that was all we got for the day.

FRIDAY..... The Penobscot River in Howland. The weather had calmed down and the sun was out, wind out of the west at 10-15 mph making it a perfect day to fish, so i thought. This area has the potential to produce over 100 smallies a day for this time of the year but we found out it had been fished hard for a week and the best we did for a few hours of fishing was a dozen taken with tubes and flukes. Water temp was 48 and most of the smallies were at 8-12 feet. We went back to South Branch to finish the day and picked up a couple, the biggest being 3.7 pounds.

SATURDAY..... Pleasant Pond/Stetson. With the weather report calling for high winds and heavy rains, we started to fish at 0830 and right off on my first cast got a hit but didn't connect but on my next cast hooked into a nice smallie of 3 pounds to start the day. Crank baits were the ticket as the water temp was 48 and the bass were feeding before the storm hit as we thought they would. An east wind was blowing but not to hard as we stayed in 10-12 feet of water and covered a big area that had rock, grass and cabbage that held lots of hungry bass. Mike connected with a couple of big l/m in the 4 pound range and I had several smallies all in the 3 to 3.8 pound range. We fished out in the grass and started to get some big crappies on our cranks that was a bonus. Some of the crappie were just slabs and one that I got went over 2 pounds, just a monster of a crappie, it was the biggest one that I have ever caught. It was about this time that the weatherman's prediction was coming true. The wind picked up and the rain started to come down and we fished for another 2 hours and caught several more quality bass. Our best 5 bass weighed around 18 pounds and that was with 3 smallies and 2 l/m. Now the weather was really kickin into high gear and we called it a day with 20 bass, all but 2 were 3 pounds up to 4 pounds and we got 20 crappie that were just plain big with that one monster slab, everything was on a deep diver.

SUNDAY... Back to Pleasant Pond. Mike had to go back to Conn. today so we fished close to home. The wind was blowing at over 30 as the storm had passed leaving some sun and clouds. We went right back to our cranks and I started off where I had left off, connecting with a nice 3 pound smallie. We stayed in the 8-12 foot zone and fished around drops with lots of grass and cabbage because of the high pressure system. Wind was out of the SW and only continued to get stronger as the day went on. We were able to fish the shores out of the wind and get some more quality bass, smallies that went over 3 pounds and l/m up to 4 pounds. The action was slow but again the quality was there. Mike said time was up and we ended the day with 12 very nice bass. Both Mike and I learned a lot about fishing with cranks at this time of the year and the quality fish they produce. It was a pleasure to fish with Mike as he has fished in several states and also does tournaments and had a lot of in-depth knowledge about fishing techniques to share with me. This was Mike's first time fishing in MAINE this late in the season and it will add another chapter in his book of bass fishing knowledge. Every fall is different depending on the weather but any time you can get out fishing with a friend makes it all worth while. Take care friends and hopefully I can put at least one more report on before the season is over. DAVID P.S.
