On the road too much but this might help some of you on Lanier.....

Summary of November gill net sampling on Lake Lanier by WRD Fisheries Biologist Reggie Weaver and Fisheries Technician 3 Chris Looney:

1. Excellent numbers of two to 12 pound striped bass were captured in lower and midlake set nets along mud/rock shoreline in water less than 20 feet deep. Stripers were concentrated on secondary creek points and feeding heavily on two-inch threadfin shad. Gill nets on the upper end of the lake contained fewer stripers. Based on these fish samples, striper anglers should target lower and midlake areas during the remainder of November.

2. Best bets for fall crappie are the major creeks on the Chestatee and Chattahoochee arms of the lake. Higher than normal numbers of 1/2 pound crappie were captured in the upper lake net sets. Best depth range to fish this month is 12 to 25 feet with natural structure (fallen trees, brush under docks, and submerged tree stumps).

3. Excellent numbers of one to three pound channel catfish were netted throughout the reservoir. There was no pattern to a preferred depth range for captured catfish.

4. Walleye fingerlings (one-inch) were stocked in 2005 and 2006. The netting crew captured five 1.5 pound walleye (two-year old fish) and one 0.5 pound fish (a young-of-the-year). While these fish were not marked and indeed have a chance to be wild fish, there is a good chance that they were stocked. These early findings show some promise for our walleye stocking efforts to diversify the Lanier fishery.

Other comments: Water temperature on 11/16 was 57 degrees. We observed sea gulls feeding on baitfish. Sea gulls are good indicators that feeding stripers and spots are nearby.

Best of luck and remember to give Thanks!

Tight lines...Bill Carson...<")))><
