Well, here it is a couple of days before the New Year and we are still getting out on the water. Absolutly amazeing! Hit Highland today with Caveman and his little 12' Jon boat. For those of you that have never fished from a tiny boat, 4 hours is close to agony for an old fart. The day was supposed to be light, 5 mph wind from the north, HAHA! When am I ever going to learn about those forecasts. After the sun came out, the wind did lay down to about the prediction. The water at Highland is real low right now and even floating the Jon Boat from the ramp area was risky. Probably only two feet of rock strewn water for a long distance. We head out slowly on the electric motor and once we get into some deeper water go to fire up his new 2.5 HP Yamaha 4 stroke. Well,it just wouldn't start. Pull and pull, and pull some more, but no go. POS 4 stroke! Outboards were never meant to by 4 strokes. ARGHHHH! Seeing that the wind was blowing from the north, and we wanted to get to Perch Rock, we drifted. Over the deep basin of first bay, vertical jigging a perch colored Blade bait from Scottie G. the trout were trying to whack the snot out of it but I never did hook up while vertical jigging the bait.

We eventually made it to Perch Rock in second bay and proceeded to work the deep water around this area without a bite. Now, 12' Jon Boats and any kind of wind don't get along as they drift like a styrofoam cup on the water. Jonathan couldn't seem to control or place the boat where I thought it needed to be as he was getting real close to the shallow (3 foot) top of the point. Well, Highland has these stupid bass that are always seeming to break the rules. Jon throws his olive green/chartruese blade into the shallow water and puts the first bass into the boat. Seeing how the only way to control a transom mounted trolling motor on a small boat is to run it in reverse, Caveman kind of had the front of the boat while sitting in the back. As I'm sitting in the middle and looking towards the bow, if I wanted to cast, I'm going to have to do it over my shoulder and backwards. That aint gonna work. And on Jon's next cast, he gets another fish on the blade bait from almost the same spot. To get a decent picture, I had to scoot my fat butt to the very bow and turn around. Dicey task in that little tin boat and VERY cold water. As it might just have been a case of color difference (kind of doubt it) I was switching over to a silver blade while Jonathan continued with his "military" color and boating his third bass. This was only about 14" and wasn't going to get a picture as time was wasting and Caveman seemed to be on a pod of fish. A short time later Jon gets his fourth bass of the day while the old man still has nothing. All I'm catching is a bunch of rocks and chasing baits so it was time to switch things up. I grabbed my trusty 1/16 oz hair jig in an alewive pattern. First cast as I floated it over the grass and stones, I finally hooked up with a Highland largemouth. No skunk for the boat which was a nice feeling. Rotten picture but no skunk. I think if we might have been able to fish from a real boat, we probably could have caught a few more. We had drifted over were these fish were holding a couple of times and the activity shut down. The good thing about drifting over where we were catching them though was we got a good look at what they seemed to be holding on. A massive 20 foot long boulder that had about 3 feet of water on the top of it and a drop to about 8 foot on the other side of it. Hope to get out at least one more time this weekend. Heck! the way this weather is going, I may not even winterize the boat.
