LAKE ELSALTO

fished Dec. 21--24 2006

you know the story

i read about it, hard about it, saw it on tv.

i am a pipe fitter from Louisiana.

and i don't spend my money easily.

i always thought they wanted way to much money to just go fishing when i could buy $1500 to $1700 dollars worth of stuff for my boat are hire a guide around here to take me fishing 6 times at Toledo bend or sam rayburn for the same money.

WELL I WAS WRONG REAL WRONG.

I was going to be off for 5 days at Christmas so i decided to go since i was not going to lose money taking off work.

so 2 weeks before Christmas i started calling looking for a lodge.

something i had not though of was that all of the lodges on elsalto were closed for christmas but one. Lake El Salto Lodge.

what was the lodge like

elsalto lodge is very cool. it has and open air dining hall with flowering bushes and trees all around. the rooms are nice and the grounds are very clean.

if you ever want to feel special go to Mexico the people will make you feel very special.

well on to the fishing.

I arrived at the lodge Thursday at about 1 pm. the owner who's name is Siguis told me i was the only guest at the lodge. a couple from japan had just left and that the wife had cough a 14# bass during their stay. i would have the run of the lodge and the lake until Monday when 2 guys from japan would be arriving.

run of the lake ya right. back in louisiana and texas on any weekend or holiday the lakes are full of boats. i was wrong again

the only fishing boats on El Salto are from the lodges boats and a few talpea fisherman. during Christmas even the tolpea guy take off for Christmas.

i was suppose to fish fri.sat.sun. but siguis said i if didn't mind he had his best guide going out to show a newer guide some more places to fish and if i wanted to go along i could get a half day fishing for free. or i could stay at the lodge and get drunk on the free margaritas.

so my fish adventure started.

i really was the only fisherman on El Salto for 3 1/2 day i felt like bill dance or some other pro the way you never see another boat anytime they are fishing.

during the the 3 1/2 day fished i had the best guide at the lodge "ceaser" he could only speak fishing. he know all the turms but only about 20 words of english

when you get a guide it's from dawn to dark. in dec. that's 13.5 hours of fishing a day.

you can go back to the lodge for lunch but if you want to keep fishing they will pack a lunch for you to eat in the boat.

as much as i spent i was not getting out of the boat for anything.

this is a first class deal .

here is what you get from a guide

when i got onto the boat the first day ceaser my guide ask to see my tackle. he rigged up my rods with 4 different baits. . he would land the fish. straighten out your lure are retie it or change it if he or you felt like their was another one that would work better.if you back lashed he would hand you another rod and start picking out the back lash for you.

about every 20 minutes or so he would ask if i wanted a sevasa" beer" or a cool drink. the only thing they didn't have in the boat was a margarita machine.

each day we would ride around the lake and he would pull up to a spot and say sinko or crank bait or what every he thought was best to start with and then point in a general direction to cast in.

who needs to fish with kvd or larry nixon when you have a guide that know the fish by their first names.

El Salto is a catch and release lake so after years of guiding on the lake they know where most of the fish were caught and released at. plus all the guides let each other know where, when & how the fish are being caught.

my totals were around 250 bass for 3 1/2 days

i probably cast around 2000 times during the 3 1/2 days don't forget that over 13 1/2 hours straight fishing a day.

i would fish from the back while ceaser would run the boat from the front. all i had to do was cast and reel. if i cough a fish i would swing it to ceaser . when i hooked a fish he would ask "GRANDE" THAT MEANT A FISH OVER 10. if i said no he wouldn't even get the net he would just grab the line and lift it up and shack it a few times to see if it would fall off. if it did he would say thank you to the fish for not having to take it off by hand.

before i went i call and asked what line and baits to bring. they said bring everything with watermellon red being the best plastic color.and make them big and no line under 20#

we caught fish on

TEXAS RIGS 1/2 to 3/4 oz. & CARILINA RIGS 1 oz. 50 # power pro

dyed all tails chartreuse 10 to 12 inch worms watermelon red and green pumpkin 8 inch lizards watermelon red and green pumpkin

everything else 20# Big Game

3/4 & 1 oz. rattle traps chrome-blue chrome -black

spinner bait 1/2 -3/4 chartreuse or chartreuse and white willow blades

crank baits

shallow and medium divers 2 - 15 ft. chartreuse blue or black back pearl blue back

TOP WATER

buzz baits black, white or chartreuse 1/2

large pop R silver black back

largest 11.2 sorry i missed most of the really big ones

2 - 10's 3 - 9's 3 -8's 5 - 7's 14 - 6's 20 -5's 50 - 4's about 150 2 to 3 #

IT FALL IN DECEMBER IN ON ELSALTO

so most of the fish i cough were schooling. it was incredible i cough a lot of dubbles of 2&3 # bass the schools would have a lot of big bass mixed in 2 to 5 or 6#

the biggest bass that i saw and know i miss was a bass that was trying to eat the bait out of a fishs mouth right at the side of the boat. ceaser was just getting ready to pull it out of the water when a giant bass came up next to the boat and tried to get the bait from the other bass. it must have been 15# plus. we pulled the boat ahead about 30 feet and i started casting like a wild man. but no luck. keep catching fish on just about every cast but the 4,5 & 6 pounders keep getting in the way by getting hooked and have to reel them in.

on any other lake that would be good luck.

the crazy thing is i only cough a hand full of little fish.

To anyone that is thinking about going to fish Lake El Sato

DO IT.
